What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Nurse Teacher position at Woonsocket Education Department?
Function: Responsible for providing health services to facilitate the student’s optimal physical, mental, emotional, and social growth and development. To provide the fullest educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absences due to illness and maximizing in-class time. To create a climate of health and well-being in all schools. The Certified School Nurse/Teacher is directly responsible to the School Principal and the Director of Special Education.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
According to the Standards of School Nursing Practice, administer nursing care under the guidelines of the District’s policies and procedures and follow medical orders provided by the medical director.
Works with the School Principal, Director of Special Education, classroom teachers, and administrators to develop the school health program
Conducts school programs of immunizations, physical examinations, and screenings as directed by the RI Department of Health and the RI Department of Education.
Observe students regularly to detect health needs and provide treatments as per standards and protocols using the Nursing Process.
Participates in the implementation and evaluation of student care.
Participates in the work of health committees as needed.
Maintain up-to-date confidential cumulative health records for each student using the Skyward system.
Refers and consults with parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other community agencies on student health matters, according to HIPAA guidelines, to promote the health and education of a student.
Visits students’ homes when necessary.
Assumes authority for the care of a student or a staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
Develops and implements individual health plans and 504 plans and participates in the IEP process as appropriate.
Participates directly and indirectly in health education to improve health by teaching people to become more informed health consumers and assume greater responsibility for their health.
Implements policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases and immunizations. Participates in in-service programs and maintains current knowledge in the nursing field.
Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
Provides age-appropriate health counseling with the goal of responsible decision-making.
Serves as a resource person to school staff members in health instruction.
Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison health professional between the home, school, and community.
Provides population-based health services for nonpublic schools in the community as per assignment.
Follows the policies of the Woonsocket School Department.
Maintains school nurse website with the assistance of the Technology Department.
Responsible for the safety of students
Assumes other general related responsibilities as may be assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited or approved institution of higher education as defined in RI Department of Education regulations.
Licensed as a Registered Nurse in Rhode Island.
Completion of an approved program designed for the preparation of Certified School Nurse/Teachers.
Minimum of 3 years of documented experience in public health, acute care, or long-term care nursing, providing services as a professional Registered Nurse.
Ability to relate with students and staff and establish a good rapport.
Must be a person of professional and personal integrity.
Experience and/or knowledge of medical computer systems and computer entry.
Must be up-to-date on required immunizations.
