Worcester is a diverse, urban school district which provides all students with the opportunity to become informed, productive, and responsible citizens. The district comprises 48 schools and programs serving approximately 25,000 students. Our students, families, and community are linguistically and culturally diverse. POSITION PURPOSE:
The Executive Director of Instruction and School Leadership will be responsible for developing, supporting, evaluating, and retaining highly-effective principals. The Executive Director will lead principals to build their teams capacities to improve teaching and learning in their schools through supervision, evaluation, coaching, and training. The Executive Director will coordinate the instructional and operational resources provided to principals through cross-functional teams representing the departments of Teaching and Learning, Multilingual Education, Special Education, Educational Technology, and Positive Youth Development. Additionally, this position is responsible for leading, integrating, and assessing system wide initiatives and programs that impact their assigned schools. The Executive Director is responsible for collaborating with District departments that oversee school operations and safety to ensure proper implementation of district initiatives, policies, and procedures. The Executive Director serves as a liaison between principals, district staff, district leadership, and community stakeholders. The Executive Director of Instruction and School Leadership must be a visionary instructional leader who can manage all of the facets of an urban public school organization through periods of significant change. Successful candidates must demonstrate a deep belief in the capacity of all students to achieve at high levels and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse set of partners and stakeholders to drive transformative change within and outside of an organization.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve on the Superintendent's Cabinet to lead the transformation of public education in Worcester.
- Provide overall direction, guidance, support and supervision to the principals/administrators of all schools and alternative programs through the development of and the continuous assessment of objectives, action plans, and accomplishments.
- Supervise, support, and develop principals’ capacity to lead their respective schools with particular focus on improved student academic outcomes, robust SEL supports, and improved community engagement.
- Oversee principals and their instructional leadership teams as they develop, implement and monitor an improvement plan that helps meet student achievement goals. This includes assisting principals and their teams in engaging in data analysis, identifying key improvement strategies, and building coherent multi-year strategies in the context of WPS’s overall strategy and theory of action; and, arranging training as needed.
- Support the capacity of each principal and their leadership teams to improve their leadership practices by developing high-yield instructional strategies that improve student outcomes.
- Develop a high-performing community of principals who leverage one another’s strengths and support one another in achieving shared goals through network activities. This may include principal meetings, peer mentoring, and/or individual job-embedded coaching focused on instructional leadership.
- Regularly monitor academic and other performance metrics.
- Lead schools in fostering meaningful relationships with families and community stakeholders to create a strong community structure to support the learning of all students.
- Leverage the resources of District departments and teams and coordinate their support of the schools.
- Pursue the district's goals for diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a particular focus on ensuring equitable access to high-quality instruction for students and closing the achievement gap.
- Manage and resolve high-priority issues of safety and crisis management.
- Participate in district meetings as directed. This may include school committee meetings and other evening meetings.
- Continuously review policies and procedures in order to make recommendations to improve upon and standardize processes.
- Assist in the preparation and issuance of various internal monthly and annual reports that accurately represent activities at the schools.
- Serve as the supervisor and primary evaluator of principals.
- Advise the superintendent on hiring, transfer, and termination of school principals and other administrative personnel as requested.
- Represent the Superintendent at meetings with other school district departments, suppliers, other public agencies, etc., as directed.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
- MA DESE license as Principal and/or Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent
- SEI endorsement from MA DESE
- Master's Degree in Educational Leadership or directly related field
- Five years successful experience as a school principal and/or district level administrator
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local educational standards
- Demonstrated analytical, reasoning, and problem solving skills
- Demonstrated organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects with attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within tight deadlines
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to use a variety of technology tools to collect, analyze, and communicate data for multiple audiences and purposes
- Doctorate in Educational Leadership or directly related field
- Demonstrated ability to build and improve leadership skills in others
- Ability to effectively read, write, speak, and understand multiple languages
