TITLE: News and Magazine Editor
DEPARTMENT: Communications and Marketing
SUPERVISOR: Interim Assistant Vice President for Communications and Marketing
General Statement of Duties: Reporting to the Interim Assistant Vice President for Communications and Marketing, the News and Magazine Editor will be responsible for two projects in the Communications Office, the weekly news site and the production of one issue of the university magazine:
University News site: The university news site (news.worcester.edu) is a WordPress site updated on a daily and weekly basis with the latest information and news from across campus. Stories are written by communications staff members. Once per week on Tuesdays, all new stories are aggregated and emailed campus wide. Editor will act as the news site editor and work closely with the Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing to manage the development and posting of content on a weekly basis.
Spring 2025 University Magazine: Working with the Interim AVP, the editor will serve as editor for the upcoming spring 2025 university magazine to be published in April 2025. Stories have been assigned and deadlines have been established by the Interim AVP.
Responsibilities:
News site
- Manage the news site including posting/updating stories on a weekly basis
- Conceptualize, assign, edit stories to 2 staff writers
- Write timely, accurate and engaging stories
- Maintain a calendar of stories
- Participate in a weekly university-wide news meeting led by the Assistant Director
- Ensure stories meet weekly deadlines
- Manage inquiries and requests regarding news coverage and photography
University Magazine
- Arranging photos and ensuring photo releases are signed
- Writing stories as needed
- Writing all headlines, subheads, captions
- Maintaining an organized and continually up-to-date Google Drive project with all content/images
- Scheduling regular check ins with writers to ensure stories are on track
- Editing all stories for accuracy, and thoroughly vetting of all content with sources
- Collaborate with the university's design firm to create the magazine to include weekly check-ins with the designers
- Manage review and copy editing process with University Advancement and copy editor
- Work closely with the printer to supervise and guide printing of the magazine.
- Hire and work closely with photographers and attend photo shoots for the magazine.
- Ensure all finalized content is posted to the online magazine site and the magazine is shared on ISSUU platform
- Serve as the overall project manager for all aspects of the magazine to ensure it stays on schedule and meets deadlines

Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- A minimum of 5-7 years' experience in communications.
- Excellent skills in writing and editing both on and offline content
- Experience in publication/magazine writing, production and layout.
- Strong interviewing, researching, interpersonal, project management, organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to manage effectively in a complex, fast moving environment and to meet daily, weekly, and long term deadlines
- Must be a creative thinker with excellent news and storytelling judgment, a persuasive communicator, and an excellent team player eager to work collaboratively with administrative, academic and governing leadership across the University.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Google and Adobe products
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree and/or Master's degree in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing, and/or related field.
- Experience in using WordPress
- Experience editing a print magazine
- Experience working at a four-year institution of higher education, public or private.

Hourly rate: $50/ hour
