Intern
The Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA is seeking a Photography & Videography Intern to capture the vibrancy of
our events, exhibitions, and creative community. Reporting to the Marketing Department, this role helps document and
promote Workhouse’s visual arts, performances, and educational programs.
About Workhouse
The Workhouse Arts Foundation, Inc. (WAF) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to operating the
Workhouse Arts Center, which opened in 2008. Located on the site of a former correctional facility, the center fosters
visual and performing arts, arts education, and historical programming. Through its diverse offerings, WAF enriches
the community by providing engaging cultural experiences. The foundation operates with an annual budget of $4 million,
supporting its mission to inspire creativity and preserve the site’s historical significance.
Summary Statement
Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, this role supports the strategic marketing, sales, and
promotional efforts of Workhouse Arts Center. The Photography & Videography Intern will support the Workhouse Arts
Center in capturing and promoting its diverse programming, including visual arts, performing arts, workshops, and
community events. The role focuses on creating dynamic visual content—photos and videos—for use in marketing
materials, social media, websites, and promotional campaigns. Responsibilities include documenting art exhibits, artists at
work, classes, and special events, contributing to enhanced visibility and engagement across the community. This internship
plays a key role in strengthening the center’s digital and media presence.
Responsibilities May Include
Photography
- Capture high-quality images of artwork, gallery exhibitions, installations and events
- Photograph artists at work, including painting, drawing, ceramics, glassblowing, and more
- Document classes, workshops, camps and events to showcase student engagement
- Cover special events, including gallery openings, performances, and community programs
Videography
- Record short-form and long-form video content for marketing and promotional use
- Film artist interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and event highlights
- Assist in editing and post-production, ensuring polished and engaging visual content
- Create reels and short clips optimized for social media platforms
Qualifications
- Experience in photography and videography (portfolio required)
- Experience in editing software (Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, Canva or similar)
- Access to professional equipment (camera, tripod, lighting, etc.)
- Ability to work on-site at Workhouse Arts Center
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Canva, Adobe Suite
Additional Notes
This is an unpaid internship with flexible hours, except when academic credit is required. The position can be partially
remote or on-site at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA. For on-site work, the schedule is typically Monday–
Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM.
