Job Summary : The Transition Specialist teaches job readiness curricula in local high schools to students living with disabilities and onsite to adults living with disabilities and / or barriers to employment. This position is designed to be full-time, averaging 40 hours per week, with benefits.
Qualifications :
- Bachelor's degree in related field required.
- Minimum experience of two years in vocational rehabilitation, rehabilitation counseling, job coaching, or special education teaching preferred.
- Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
- Self-starter who can work well independently to meet goals.
- Must have comfort and aptitude to work with people of various cognitive abilities as well as a range of general disabilities.
- Must be computer literate with strong word processing skills.
- Must have a driving record acceptable to WE Inc.'s insurance company for coverage, plus minimum 100 / 300 auto insurance.
To be successful in this role, the person must have the ability to evaluate aptitudes, skills, capabilities, and interests of students to ensure that the curricula provided is scaled to the level of the students. Additionally, this individual must have classroom management skills and a general knowledge of disabilities.
Job Responsibilities & Performance Standards :
TRANSITION SERVICES
Effectively teach the curricula developed by the Transition Program Manager, in accordance with the parameters each school establishes and with the authorizations supplied by referring counselors from the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services.
Following guidelines and provided templates, provide thorough reports on each student to the referring counselor(s).
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Proactively and regularly communicate with referring counselors and local schoolteachers / personnel to gather feedback and ensure their satisfaction with WE Inc.'s services.
Keep knowledge base current by attending all required training, in-services, conferences, and meetings.

Typical Working Conditions : Work is performed primarily in local schools in the Birmingham metro area and adjacent counties. Work may require standing for extended periods of time in a classroom setting, and may require standing, stooping, reaching, job coaching and lifting 40 pounds. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer, telephone, copier, and other office equipment, as necessary. Requires normal range of hearing. Requires automotive insurance, an active driver's license, and access to an automobile. Involves contact with staff, school administrators, students, and the public.
Work Hours :
This is a full-time non-exempt position. Hours will vary according to local school schedules, with typical hours between 7 : 30 a.m. and 4 : 00 pm, Monday through Friday.
