Professional Engineer – Preconstruction Division
The Mechanical Professional Engineer is part of the Design Build/Design Assist Preconstruction team. The success of Mechanical PE is measured by participating in successful projects on the design build/design assist Preconstruction team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, selecting, and optimizing HVAC systems for a variety of projects, ensuring efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness from conception through construction. This position requires close collaboration with the project team, including architects, engineers, contractors, and clients. The Professional Engineer portion of the design build/design assist team is a vital component to achieve viable solutions and designs for mechanical systems at a target cost for clients in a timely manner.
Mechanical PE reports directly to the Vice President of Preconstruction.
Responsibilities of the Mechanical PE include, but are not limited to:
- Evaluation of mechanical systems for proper design and functionality
- Design of mechanical systems (HVAC, Plumbing, Process,) by applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials.
- Conduct thorough on-site surveys to assess existing conditions, including mechanical systems, site layouts, and potential HVAC system challenges.
- Develop preliminary HVAC system designs and layouts that meet project requirements, including load calculations, airflow distribution, and space constraints.
- Prepare schematic HVAC system designs, including ductwork, piping layouts, mechanical room configurations, and other relevant components, adhering to project specifications and building codes.
- Compare different HVAC system designs and technologies (VRF, geothermal, chillers, etc.) to ensure optimal performance and cost-efficiency.
- Work closely with architects, contractors, and other engineering disciplines to coordinate HVAC designs with building plans and other systems.
- Lead the final engineering efforts in collaboration with outside mechanical engineering firms, hired to complete the design document development.
- Provide support during the construction phase by reviewing shop drawings, submittals, and responding to RFI's (Requests for Information) to ensure that the installed HVAC systems meet design intent.
- Develop operational solutions in support of Customer requirements and needs.
- Develop and design mechanical systems for HVAC, Plumbing, and Process systems generated from customer and client narratives.
- Participate in the development of design build/design assist projects as a key team member consisting of engineers, preconstruction executives, estimators, and business development personnel to achieve goals set forth by the client regarding design, functionality, and cost.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
- 5 years of experience in HVAC design, preferably in a design-build environment.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC system design, load calculations, and equipment selection.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, or other design software.
- Experience with energy modeling tools and lifecycle cost analysis.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Knowledge of industry standards, including ASHRAE, LEED, and local building codes.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with strong attention to detail and deadlines.
