Overview

The Director of Enterprise Architecture and Development is a key member of the Information Technology Senior Leadership Team.  As a strategic and tactical leader, the Director is responsible for leading Enterprise Architecture, Quality Assurance, Innovation and Enablement, and Development teams across the technology organization.   By serving both our locations throughout Wrench Group and as a partner with our internal agencies this role plays critical part in the overall delivery of the IT Value Proposition, Mission (Effectively support day to day business operations and unlock the future of the organization through innovation, security, scalability, and technology enabled efficiencies to create competitive advantage), and Vision (Industry leading provider of business-driven technology solutions that prioritize people-first, continuous improvement, and top-tier business performance).   

The Director of Enterprise Architecture and Development is the primary conduit that works across our various IT disciplines, requiring a strong strategic mindset, delivery orientation, commitment to collaboration, and deep technical expertise in enterprise architecture, systems integration, and software development.  By driving collaboration with business leaders, IT teams, and third-party vendors to the Director delivers innovative, scalable, and reliable technology solutions that align with the company's business objectives.

Responsibilities

What Will I Do?

The Director Enterprise Architecture and Development will focus on thought leadership, strategic/tactical planning, technical delivery, and decision enablement of business and IT leaders to determine investments that balance and prioritize current operational disruptions and opportunities, with the longer-term strategic vision of the organization including technology guidance, road maps, principles, standards and best practices.

 

Enterprise Architecture Leadership: 

  • Develop and maintain the enterprise architecture framework to ensure it supports the organization's strategic objectives and operational needs.
  • Define and enforce architecture principles, guidelines, and standards to drive consistency, scalability, and security across all IT solutions.
  • Lead enterprise architecture reviews, ensuring alignment with business needs and technology trends.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to optimize technology solutions and reduce complexity.

Quality Assurance and Testing: 

  • Oversee the creation and execution of comprehensive quality assurance strategies, ensuring that software and systems meet all functional, security, and performance requirements.
  • Establish and maintain testing methodologies, tools, and processes to guarantee high-quality products through automated and manual testing practices. Including the evaluation and implementation of tools for test automation, continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD), and performance monitoring.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements related to product quality, security, and performance.
  • Work closely with development teams to prioritize and resolve defects in a timely manner.
  • Foster a quality-driven culture across development and architecture teams, ensuring that quality assurance is integrated into the development lifecycle from design to deployment.

 

Software Development Leadership: 

  • Lead and manage a team of software developers, architects, and technical leads.
  • Oversee the software development lifecycle, ensuring the delivery of high-quality solutions on time and within budget.
  • Mentor development teams in adopting best practices, modern development frameworks, and agile methodologies.
  • Establish and enforce coding standards, best practices, and performance benchmarks.
  • Ensure robust software testing, quality, and version control processes are in place.
  • Ensure thorough documentation of design requirements, build specifications, test results, defects, and lessons learned for continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Product, QA, DevOps, and Business Units to deliver scalable and secure applications.
  • Evaluate and implement emerging technologies to improve product capabilities and development efficiency.
  • Monitor system performance, security, and support application upgrades and maintenance.
  • Report on development metrics and KPIs to IT leadership.

Innovation and Enablement:

  • Innovation Strategy Development: Formulate and implement a comprehensive innovation strategy that aligns with the company's mission and long-term goals.
  • Emerging Technology Assessment: Continuously evaluate new technologies and trends to determine their potential impact and applicability to the organization's needs.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with various departments to identify pain points and opportunities where innovative solutions can be applied.
  • Enablement Programs: Design and oversee programs that equip teams with the tools, training, and support necessary to adopt new technologies and processes effectively.
  • Change Management: Lead change management efforts to ensure smooth transitions during the implementation of innovative solutions, minimizing disruption and maximizing adoption.
  • Performance Metrics: Establish and monitor key performance indicators to measure the success and impact of innovative initiatives.

Team Management and Collaboration: 

  • Lead and mentor a cross-functional team of architects, developers, and quality assurance professionals, fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture.
  • Manage team performance, provide guidance and feedback, and ensure continuous professional development through training and mentorship.
  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration among architecture, development, and quality assurance teams to deliver cohesive and integrated solutions.
  • Manage and develop a high-performing team of architects, developers, and engineers.
  • Build strong relationships with internal business stakeholders to understand their needs and deliver tailored solutions.
  • Collaborate with IT operations, security, and infrastructure teams to ensure smooth implementation and integration of systems.
  • Cultivate a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and collaboration within the IT department.

Stakeholder Management Communication: 

  • Present complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Provide strategic advice and recommendations to senior leadership regarding technology investment and risk management.

Governance and Compliance: 

  • Ensure adherence to industry regulations, security standards, and company policies in all IT architecture and development activities.
  • Establish governance frameworks for technology decision-making and solution selection.

Strategy, Planning and Roadmap: 

  • Collaborate with IT leadership to define and align the long-term IT strategy and roadmap with business goals.
  • Analyze emerging technologies and trends, assessing their potential impact on the enterprise’s architecture and development.
  • Prioritize technology initiatives, ensuring a balance between innovation, cost-effectiveness, and business value.

Qualifications

Do I Have What it Takes

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 15 years of experience in enterprise architecture and development, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality data solutions with 7 years of leadership of a technical team.

Technical Expertise:

  • Demonstrated ability and familiarity with maintaining a comprehensive enterprise architecture framework, standards, and governance principles.
  • Deep understanding of enterprise architecture frameworks.
  • Strong hands-on experience with cloud platforms, microservices, APIs, and integration strategies.
  • Deep understanding of standard software development methodologies and best practices.
  • Experience with application modernization, cloud migration, and digital transformation initiatives.
  • Knowledge and understanding of standard testing approaches, practices, methodologies, and tooling within software development.
  • Familiarity with data architecture, analytics platforms, and security best practices.

Strategic & Leadership Skills:

  • Ability to develop and communicate a clear enterprise architecture and development strategy aligned with technology and business goals.
  • Skilled in driving alignment between IT and business teams through architectural governance and standards.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams, managing complex projects, and influencing stakeholders at all levels.

  • Analytical mindset with the ability to balance long-term vision with practical implementation.
