General Definition of Work
20 HOURS PER WEEK. APPLICANT MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK A FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY.
Performs protective services work ensuring the protection of judges, court officers, witnesses, jurors, and civilians in the courtroom and adjacent waiting areas; escorting incarcerated persons; and securing courtroom evidence. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Sergeant. Work hours per week are dependent upon court schedules.
Essential Functions

- Provides general security for courtrooms, judicial corridors, and other hallways and common areas.
- Visually, physically, and electronically screens and searches members of the public who seek admittance to the courtrooms or County offices for prohibited materials or contraband, or for proper attire.
- Monitors entrance to County offices using metal detectors; searches courtrooms for contraband; enforces courtroom rules of conduct.
- Patrols hallways and offices to safeguard against breaches of security; implements security measures for multi-defendant or high-risk trials; uses restraints on inmates; intervenes in, and attempts to end, disturbances in work areas.
- Administers to the care of and control over jury members.
- Performs division support activities; records court data; completes paperwork, reports and forms; escorts inmates to and from jail and arranges inmate transport.
- Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications & Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
High school diploma or GED and at least one year of prior experience in law enforcement or security, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required upon hire.
Must be able to pass a physical evaluation and background check investigation.
Knowledge of court procedures and practices; knowledge of use of force and arrest policies and procedures; skill in the use of standard office equipment, including computer and software programs; skill in assessing situations quickly and accurately and implementing responses and course of action to resolve serious/major incidents within established guidelines; verbal and written communication skills sufficient to effectively draft and present sensitive or technical information and respond to questions from a wide variety of audiences, and reading comprehension skills sufficient to understand and interpret technical documents; interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange and/or convey information, give and receive work direction, and maintain effective working relationships; physical ability to intercede in verbal and physical disagreements; ability to perform first aid, CPR and operate a defibrillator; ability to effectively deal with hostile, potentially violent individuals and de-escalate dangerous behavior; ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality regarding sensitive information; ability to perform data entry into various databases; ability to operate security equipment; ability to effectively organize time and anticipate, plan and successfully respond to changing circumstances; ability to perform all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices; ability to communicate courteously and professionally while maintaining positive working relationships with others when carrying out all job functions.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires sitting and lifting and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to receive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
