What are the responsibilities and job description for the Reading/Writing Tutor position at Write Seattle LLC?
***Note: Unless you live in Seattle (or possibly Shoreline), this position probably won’t be convenient. Please see the “Home Library System” section for more details. While all tutors have the option to take online sessions, we are not currently looking for online-only tutors.***
Seattle Reading/Writing Tutors Needed! Great Part-Time Job!
· Work one-on-one with elementary-, middle-, high-school, or adult students to support their growth in writing, reading, study skills, and more.
· $47.50 for one hour of online tutoring, $52.50 for a one-hour session at your “home library."
· Work as a contractor for a very small business that will try its darndest to support and do right by you.
· Choose your own hours of availability.
Must Have:
· Undergraduate degree, ideally one that emphasized reading and writing. (Graduate degree is a plus!)
· Outstanding writing skills & academic record. (Other areas of expertise, like history, public speaking, science, math, etc. are all big pluses!)
· Patient, friendly, confident demeanor
· Enough experience teaching reading and/or writing skills that you can work independently with students. There is no Write Seattle curriculum or any set structure for how tutors conduct sessions. Tutors must be confident meeting with a student, assessing their needs, and then coming up with prompts, readings, or other assignments that will support their academic growth. Tutors need not work with all age groups, but must have an understanding of the categories of academic competency relevant to the students they do work with.
· Strong organizational skills and the capacity to respond to emails within a reasonable timeframe.
Home Library System
We do not have an office. Contracting tutors work independently with Write Seattle students, often at one of the libraries the tutor chooses as a “home library.” We try our best to set you up with a convenient schedule of back-to-back students, but that’s not always possible––sometimes you’ll end up with a stand-alone session, at least until we’re able to find another student to go before or after.
We’re currently looking for tutors willing to set their home libraries in Magnolia, North Seattle, West Seattle, and potentially Beacon Hill or Montlake/Madison Park.
Who, Where, When, And How Often
This is part-time contract work. It’s hard to get more than 15 hours a week, and it will usually take some time to build up to your desired number of students/hours per week.
You can set your own hours of availability, but during the school year most students will hope to meet between 3:30 and 8pm on Mondays through Thursdays, or on the weekend.
Finally, many of our students hope to work with their tutor for the full academic year, so at this point we are looking for tutors who plan to be available through June of 2025. (Of course things change and you will not have to sign any commitment to that effect; this is a good-faith request.)
