WSP USA is seeking a highly energetic, self-motivated, and goal-oriented Associate Structural Engineer to support our Transportation Facilities Group in the New York, New York office. With the intimacy of a tight nit group of staff, along with the support of a large firm, this is an excellent and unique opportunity for the right candidate to challenge themselves and to grow their career.

The Transportation Facilities Group (TFG) leads and design projects that supports local and regional growth initiatives through small and large transportation projects. Our goal is to team with our agency clients and to develop solutions to the complex challenge of advancing transportation throughout the region. TFG has over 60 engineers and architects based in New York City.

The position offers varied projects in the transportation field within the NY Metro Region. The Structural Engineer position will work under the supervision of a senior structural engineer and includes designs in rail and bus stations, airports, transportation hubs, rail systems, as well a wide array of projects that lead and support the engineering divisions. Clients include NYCT, MTA Bus, LIRR, MNR, PANY&NJ, Amtrak, NJ Transit, contractors, and local utilities. The scale of work varies from small to very large projects and offers the candidate the ability to continually switch between multiple project types on any given day and offers tremendous exposure to varied disciplines within the New York Office.

Your Impact

Development of structural design, details and drawings, including calculations for new construction and renovation work

Developing drawings in REVIT (BIM), AutoCAD, and MicroStation

Utilizing Microsoft Excel and Mathcad Prime to develop of structural calculations

Knowledge in structural analysis software such as SAP, STAAD.Pro, RAM Steel, ETABS, and / or SAFE (or equivalent)

Field inspection of structural systems of transportation facilities

Coordinating with various engineering disciplines as well as with architects

Working within a paperless (or limited-use) office environment and remote working when required

Complete training on assigned tasks.

Work collaboratively with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, local, and privately funded improvement and development projects.

Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Typical projects types include :

Transportation Facilities including administration buildings, shop and maintenance buildings, subway and rail stations, and substations

Vent and utility buildings

Aviation structures including terminals, concourses, hangers, and ancillary support structures

Resiliency related studies and design

Parks and recreation centers

Growth Opportunities include :

Develop into the Structural Engineer level

Assist in the development of proposals

Work on design-build and other high-profile projects

Direct interaction with clients

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering; Master’s degree highly preferred

1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior structural design experience.

Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate

Proficient in the development of structural engineering calculations, structural analysis models, details and contract drawings.

Knowledgeable in state and city building codes, as well as industry standard specifications (ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360, etc.)

Understanding of construction documents

Knowledgeable in STAAD.Pro, SAP, ETABS, SAFE, RAM Structural System, Mathcad, Excel or similar structural design software

Proficiency with AutoCAD; REVIT (or the ability to quickly learn); knowledgeable in MicroStation (or ability to quickly learn)

Interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

Self-starter, able to work independently and able to multi-task

Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug / alcohol and harassment policies.

Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Preferred Qualifications :

Structural engineering experience in buildings and similar structures within the transportation industry.

Master of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering.

Knowledge in the development of CSI-format construction specifications.

Compensation :

Expected Salary (all locations) : $65,400.00 - $107,910.00

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and / or federal law.
