Utilizes independent judgment in performing both routine and complex laboratory tests for physician's use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Works with minimal supervision. Assists in providing guidance and instruction to new employees, students as scheduled.
- Arranges priorities, especially for requests that must have very short TAT.
- Follows the Hospital and Laboratory policies for Safety which includes proper use of Personal.
- Protective Equipment and Chemicals.
- Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
- Must document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Must be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must contract the problems or immediately notify the supervisor or director.
- Must follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory, established acceptable levels of performance.
- Practices clinical science in the specialty of immunohematology, which means is responsible for the examination of specimens taken from the human body to provide information or products for use in the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of a disease.
- Follows procedures for processing biological specimen for analysis. Evaluates and solves specimen problems and follows procedures for specimen rejection.
- Performs immunopharmacological clinical laboratory examination including compatibility testing, unexpected transfusion outcome investigation, antibody identification and related immunopharmacological procedures, including proficiency testing and quality control.
- Detects discrepancies in results and institutes correct follow-up procedures, develops solutions to problems concerning the generation of laboratory data. Follows procedures for issuing blood/blood components, laboratory test results and reports critical results according to section policy.
- Performs preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instruments. Keeps adequate records. Informs supervisor of equipment on product failure, and problems requiring special attention.
- Performs and document daily quality control measures. Recognizes and solves quality control problems. Documents corrective actions when quality control results exceed tolerance limits.
- Evaluates new techniques, instruments and procedures as required.
- Utilizes supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.
- Performs clinical laboratory examinations as well as clerical duties as needed.
- Maintains a neat, clean and efficient work area.
- Exercises all duties consistent with the needs of all patients regardless of age.
- Understands, follows and implements the Hospital's policies for confidentiality of patient and employee records.
- Exhibits good customer relations skills.
- Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as Patient specimens.
- Performs all other duties as required.
Position Requirements:
- This position requires a minimum formal education of Bachelor Degree or certification equivalent and a minimum of 1 year job-related experience.
- Desired (not required) criteria include: Baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology or a related field plus, 1 year training (6 months in Blood Bank) and 1-2 years experience or hold applicable NYC CQ as of 6/30/94 and has worked as a medical technologist at least 3 years since 1989.
- New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
- Board-registered with one of national registries associated with laboratory practice (NCA, ASCP, etc.) preferred.
