Position: Youth Service Coordinator

Classification: Full -Time, WGRL system has 2 YSC positions

Primary Location: One YSC is located at the Grayson County Library and the other is located at the Wythe County Library

Reports to: Branch Manager

Wages: Based on and hourly rate; commensurate with experience

Hours: Hours may vary according to programming and community functions

Schedule: May include nights, weekends and early mornings, attendance at related programs is required.

Supervises: May supervise staff, as assigned, and volunteers

Position Status: FLSA non-exempt

Summary Of Duties

This position will serve as the Early Literacy, Children’s and Outreach Coordinator. Duties include planning and managing programming (ages birth - 5 and grades K- 6), coordinating and establishing outreach to community organizations, and managing Summer Reading relationships with local schools. Requires working in cooperation with the YSC counterpart for region wide events, including regional Reading programs. The person in this position is responsible for collection development for ages birth to 18 yrs. old and developing viable programming at the various age levels. They will oversee recruiting volunteers as needed. YSCs participate in continuing education activities and keep up with emerging technologies.

Primary Duties

  • A public and visible face of the Children’s Library services both within the library and outside in the community
  • Responsible for program development and implementation for stated age groups and their caregivers
  • Responsible for maintaining a vibrant and engaging Children’s and Young Adult circulation collection.
  • Works with regional counter parts as part of a Regional Children and Youth Services team
  • Responsible for preparing marketing information related to children and youth services in print or for social media and working with the Public Relations staff person.
  • Provides excellent customer services to our youngest library users, tweens, teens, and their caregivers
  • Maintains strong relationships with schools, various local organizations, and individuals to provide outstanding outreach to the community
  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to children, caregivers, and educators in the community
  • Participates in the collection development of print, making suggestions for digital services and materials for children birth to age eighteen
  • Keeps up to date on children’s issues and development in the library profession and education through study, reading, and by attending appropriate workshops and training sessions
  • Interprets library rules, policies, and procedures as needed for library patrons
  • Collect and interpret statistical data
  • Create reports as needed for the Regional Library Director, Board of Trustees, and as requested for Friends Groups
  • Follows budget areas related to children's programs, supplies, and materials. Work with Friends Group on developing a Children’s Services budget when needed
  • Requires ability to work a flexible schedule
  • A reliable means of transportation is required
  • Other duties as assigned

General Requirements:

Work is performed primarily in a library environment. Working with the public daily. Position requires excellent customer service, oral, and written skills.

The person in these positions requires strong computer skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The YSC’s will often need to provide computer support for library users and should be familiar with Windows and MAC operating systems, iOS, Android, and Chrome devices.

Consistent, personalized customer service that follows library policy is a priority. The library assistant must be able to maintain a calm, professional demeanor when dealing with stressful situations.

Manual dexterity and physical ability to reach and shelve library materials, sort books, use software, and a variety of media formats at a variety of heights is required. Sufficient vision, hearing, and speech are essential to communicate with patrons and to assist them in locating materials, using computers, or other office equipment. Must have sufficient hand eye coordination and manual dexterity to operate a personal computer and keyboard, telephone, and other office equipment. Physical exertion may be required to lift library materials and other supplies from overhead and from the floor. Must have the ability to move around the library. This position may require movement, standing, or sitting for long periods of time.

Modern libraries function as a community center; where patrons gather to socialize and staff will be enthusiastic about supporting that function.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates Degree or equivalent work experience
  • Experience in a library environment
  • Experience in developing programs
  • Good oral and written skills.
  • Experienced and comfortable with public speaking

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in a related field (Library Science or Early Childhood Development or Elementary or Secondary Education) or equivalent work experience
  • Two years' experience in a library environment working in youth services
  • Ability to prioritize, manage, organize, and present work/information effectively
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community members and staff;
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service
  • Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment and handle a variety of customer services issues tactfully
  • Ability to prioritize, manage, organize, and present work/information effectively
  • Skilled in oral, written, and interpersonal communication

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $14.75 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Day shift
  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as needed
