Job Summary
The Director of University Communications is responsible for providing leadership and strategic oversight for Xavier University of Louisiana’s communication initiatives. This role ensures the proper development and organization of the communications calendar, project deadlines, and operational objectives, including communications tools, such as press releases, newsletters, executive communications, websites, presentations, and marketing collateral. This position will ensure that all communications are strategically pitched, consistent, reliable, and in compliance with industry standards and university brand guidelines. The Director supervises a team of communications professionals in media relations, enrollment management, academic and student affairs, and general assignment writing to produce high-quality content that strengthens the university’s reputation and fosters engagement among internal and external audiences. Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of three years of professional experience in marketing or communication roles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, graphic design, multimedia, or a related field required.
- Higher education experience preferred.

- Expertise in writing, strategic communications, and creative storytelling.
- Proficiency with analytics, creative, and project management software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, video editing software, content management systems, Asana, Google Analytics, etc.).

- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities, including written and verbal communication.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Directly supervise and provide mentorship to the following positions:
- Communications Specialist for Enrollment Management – responsible for supporting Enrollment Management communications initiatives.
- Communications Specialist for Academic and Student Affairs– responsible for Academic and Student Affairs communications initiatives.
- Writer – responsible for creating written content across mediums, including publications and website items.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and professional growth within the team.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide opportunities for skill enhancement and professional development.
- Create, receive, and review reports on the progress of communications campaigns.
- Manage the flow of both internal and external communications across multiple channels.
- Ensure all materials adhere to Xavier University’s branding guidelines, maintaining a cohesive and professional image.
- Serve as a brand ambassador, ensuring consistent storytelling across all university platforms.
Oversee the development and execution of projects, including press releases, articles, and communications plans.
Manage workflows and ensure timely delivery of high-quality outputs. -
- Work closely with Enrollment Management, Institutional Advancement, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and other units to produce materials that support recruitment, fundraising, and public relations goals.
- Collaborate with external vendors and freelancers as needed.
- Oversee cross-department communications and resolve any communications issues as they arise.
- Coordinate and/or collaborate with faculty, committees, departments, programs, and colleges to assess needs and identify available resources.
- Stay informed of emerging media and marketing trends.
- Introduce innovative tools and processes to enhance the team’s efficiency and output quality.
