Xavier University invites applications for a full-time Instructional Designer who also serves as Manager of the Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) team. IDT, consisting of the Manager, two additional Instructional Designers and an Instructional Technologist, provides the training and support for faculty teaching online and also supports technology-enhanced instruction more broadly. Currently, Xavier has 15 fully online degree programs, additional online certificates, and many online courses offered in on-ground programs. More than 300 faculty have completed Introduction to Online Course Design (IOCD), Xavier’s online training course, which runs approximately three times per year.
The Manager for Instructional Design & Technology (IDT) provides strategic direction for Xavier’s distance learning and technology-enhanced efforts, ensuring faculty have training, support and resources for developing quality programs and courses. The Manager oversees online course development and redesign processes, establishes and manages project work flow to meet deadlines, and aligns the IDT team’s work with the University’s distance learning priorities and initiatives. The Manager maintains best practice guidelines and provides strategic input on the direction of online and technology-enhanced learning at Xavier. The Manager oversees efforts to ensure students in online programs and courses are well oriented and supported, including by reviewing student feedback. The Manager coordinates the work of the IDT team with the Center for Teaching Excellence and Digital Media Services to align online course design and technology selection and integration with Xavier’s pedagogical standards, and to provide training.

Duties And Responsibilities
- Manages the work of and provides direction for the IDT team, establishing and managing project work flow to ensure online course development and redesign meet completion deadlines.
- Sets and maintains best practice guidelines for the course design and technology integration assistance provided to faculty, ensuring the integration of design and usability standards that adhere to Xavier’s criteria, with attention to Jesuit pedagogy principles.
- Designs and delivers training that utilizes effective pedagogical practices, addresses faculty and student needs, and provides options for the improvement of instruction, primarily through distance education modalities and technology-based solutions.
- Manages processes for reviewing and redesigning existing online courses and programs; supports faculty in redesign efforts.
- Provides strategic input on the direction of online and technology-enhanced learning at Xavier.
- Promotes best practices, including universal design and ADA compliance related to online and technology-enhanced instruction.
- Oversees efforts to ensure students in online courses are well-oriented and supported, including by reviewing student feedback.
- Oversees implementation and decisions related to the LMS (Canvas), web-based course evaluation software and other instructional technologies, which are supported by the Instructional Technologist.
- Coordinates with Digital Media Services for online course materials related to video, media and graphics.
- Coordinates with the Center for Teaching Excellence to align online course design and technology selection with Xavier’s pedagogical standards, and to provide training for online and technology-enhance instruction.
Required:
- Master’s Degree in Instructional Design, Training, Instructional Technology, or a closely related field.
- 3-5 years of related experience.
- Knowledge and application of instructional design theories, adult learning theories, and best practices for online course design.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty across disciplines and guide them through course design and development processes.
- Experience developing and delivering training programs in both online and in-person formats.
- Experience providing direction to others.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and support a variety of people with varying skills, abilities, and personalities.
- Experience working with a learning management system and other instructional technologies, including using Artificial Intelligence to enhance teaching and learning.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and timelines simultaneously.
- Familiarity with accessibility compliance issues including section 508 ADA compliance.
- Familiarity with copyright and fair use guidelines.
- A doctoral degree in instructional design or a closely related field.
- 5 or more years of total experience.
- Experience working in a post-secondary educational institution.
- Experience teaching online in higher education.
- Experience managing teams effectively.
- Experience in designing and leading faculty development programs, including workshops and affinity groups.
- Experience with program assessment and quality improvement.
- Experience with project management.
- Proficiency using the Instructure Canvas LMS.
- Experience interpreting and applying copyright and fair use guidelines in the context of online learning and multimedia design.
- Basic competencies with design and courseware authoring applications.
- Basic competency in the use of HTML.
