Xavier University’s Office of Advising and Learning is seeking an Assistant Director of Advising & Academic Advisor for the College of Professional Sciences. This position has a focus on first-year and at-risk student population and collaborates with faculty to help undergraduate students meet their academic and career goals. The Assistant Director and Academic Advisor assists students in understanding major and core requirements, planning satisfactory academic progress, course selection and registration. In addition, this role coordinates the program evaluation and assessment efforts for the Office of Advising and Learning Support. This position plays a critical role providing front-line support to students and linking the Office of Advising with the College of Professional Sciences at the undergraduate level.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide individualized, developmental, appreciative academic advising to 200-250 current and prospective College of Professional Sciences undergraduate students with specific emphasis on first-year students.
- Advise students in their planned curriculum, explain how classes lead to a degree and help achieve their academic and career goals; help students gain proficiency in understanding course requirements and sequencing to graduate on time and educate students on academic policies, procedures and deadlines.
- Assist with Road-to-Xavier online registration process for incoming students.
- Evaluate academic progress of advisees and in consultation with students and faculty partners, determine a plan to help them reach their academic and career goals.
- Serve as the Office of Advising and Learning Support project manager for academic advising assessment and evaluation for professional advising staff. In consultation with the Dean, determine timelines, assessment procedures, analyze data to inform planning and contribute to annual reports.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Required:
o Master’s degree required in Higher Education, Counseling, Social Work or related field
o 1-3 years of experience working with undergraduate students
o Understanding of college student development theory and advising practices
o Collaborative and able to build relationships with students and variety of constituents internal and externally
o Working knowledge of college curriculum and institutional policies and practices which support students’ academic journeys
- Preferred:
o Experience utilizing student information software to document and coordinate work with students (E.g. Navigate360, Banner, Workday)
o Experience gathering, analyzing, and using quantitative and qualitative data to inform
o Experience working 1:1 with students to develop academic plans
