Senior Director, Curation & Platforms, Yahoo News

Yahoo News is seeking a Head of Curation & Platforms to shape and implement strategies for curation, packaging and distribution, finding ways to surface the right content and engage with our readers across multiple products and platforms.

This role is central to the success of Yahoo News and will set a strategy to grow our audience by placing readers at the heart of our decision-making and offering them the best possible experience, wherever they are.

The Head of Curation & Platforms will work closely with product, engineering and news leaders to develop and articulate clear goals and tactics for growth, and will oversee multiple editorial teams, including homepage & apps, alerts, social media, newsletters, optimization and the copy desk. This group includes more than 45 journalists who are responsible for programming, packaging and optimizing both partner and original content across multiple products, developing fresh approaches for new platforms and building templates, workflows and tools that help us maintain high standards while delivering valuable, memorable and innovative user experiences everywhere we publish our work.

This position calls for someone with a relentless focus on bringing impactful journalism to audiences through timely, relevant and sophisticated packaging and promotion across our many platforms. The ideal candidate has strong execution skills, superior editorial judgment, thrives in a fast-paced newsroom and can make decisions under pressure.

Responsibilities:

• Effectively manage a team of journalists dedicated to increasing engagement of Yahoo News users through the homepage, search, apps, newsletters, alerts, community and social platforms

• Partner with news and product leadership to develop and articulate clear goals and strategies for growth on critical platforms, focusing on high-quality, differentiated products that can win audience loyalty in the long term
  

• Manage key distribution partnerships and play a key role in developing future distribution and packaging opportunities

• Effectively drive transformation and growth in the teams and the products under your purview, by focusing on effective communication and feedback and setting a high bar for excellence

• Keep up with industry trends and move quickly to seize opportunities

• Refine strategies and workflows for launching newsletters, optimizing articles, creating assets for social platforms, and maximizing promotion of key pieces across platforms

Requirements:

• The right person for this role is an excellent communicator and collaborator with extensive knowledge of digital publishing best practices, competitive zeal and a relentless drive to explore and harness the possibilities that technology enables

• Significant experience in leading high-performing teams at a high-traffic digital news publication

• A proven track record of developing differentiated strategies for curating content across multiple platforms and products

• Passion for management, mentorship and training of newsroom talent and the ability to coordinate people with many different skills to achieve challenging outcomes together

• Demonstrated ability to lead complex initiatives and launch innovative projects

• Strong editing skills and expertise in digital platforms

• Ability to draw clear and actionable insights from quantitative and qualitative data and effectively communicate those insights, and utilize them to inform coverage and promotion decisions
