Position Focus :
The Assistant Director, Research serves as a senior advisor to the Vice Chair of Research and the Section Chiefs of Research and Global Health, providing strategic and operational leadership to advance the Department of Emergency Medicine’s research initiatives. Reporting to the Associate Director for Emergency Medicine, this role :
- Oversees research budgets, grant administration, and compliance with IRB / HIC protocols while ensuring the success of research programs and clinical trials.
- The Assistant Director will work closely with faculty, administrative staff, and institutional partners, including the Yale Pre-Award Team (YPAT) and Surgical Integrated Business Operations (IBO), to support the department’s research mission and align with institutional goals.
- Act as the primary point of contact for research operations and faculty coordination within the department.
- Ensure alignment of departmental research initiatives with institutional goals and compliance requirements.
- Manage the research section’s overall budget, ensuring financial sustainability and compliance with funding requirements.
- Work closely with YPAT and IBO partners to oversee pre- and post-award grant processes.
- Monitor funding allocations, expenditure tracking, and financial reporting for research projects.
- Oversee and provide strategic direction for the Enroller Program and other departmental research initiatives.
- Ensure timely submission of progress reports, grant applications, and required research documentation.
- Support faculty with IRB / HIC protocol submissions and ensure compliance with clinical trial regulations.
- Supervise administrative and research support staff, including coordinators, trainees, and faculty research teams.
- Identify staffing needs and facilitate hiring, onboarding, and professional development for research personnel.
- Provide faculty support by streamlining research operations, securing necessary resources, and optimizing workflow efficiency.
Essential Duties
1. Keep abreast of laws, regulations, external and internal policies and procedures governing the administration of grants and contracts and serve as a resource to faculty and staff. 2. Interprets and consistently apply Federal, State and agency specific policies, procedures and guidelines to individual issues as they arise and ensure consistency with University policies and procedures. 3. Recommends and draft changes to University and department policies and procedures. 4. Fosters good communication within the team and between the team and its customers. 5. Ensures that key personnel are compliant with Conflict of Interest, Human Subject, Animal, Safety, HIPAA and other training mandates. 6. Anticipates evolving data needs and pro-actively lead. 7. Creates and runs a large inventory of daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for faculty and departmental staff, typically to support research proposal preparation or to support ongoing sponsored projects. 8. Manages the planning, development and implementation of new or revised internal standard operating procedures. 9. Acts as a resource and liaison to other University departments. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :
Master's degree in research administration,business, healthcare,or a related field (MBA, MPH, or MHA preferred) with experience in grant management and research operations. Candidates must have financial acumen, expertise in IRB protocols, clinical trials, compliance, and proficiency in project management tools.Leadership in staff supervision, faculty support and program oversight is essential
