Position Focus :
YASIC is a Yale Research Core equipped with five Stable Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometers, an Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometer, an Ion Chromatograph, a Greenhouse Gas GC, a Total Organic Carbon Analyzer, and other scientific equipment. The successful candidate will provide specialized technical support for the Yale Analytical and Stable Isotope Center (YASIC), focusing on operating, maintaining, and instructing facility users in sample preparation equipment and radiocarbon analysis. YASIC operates a Mini Carbon Dating System (MICADAS) from IonPlus which expanded YASIC’s isotopic analysis capabilities to include radiocarbon-14 analysis for Carbon Dating. Research focuses on climate change and carbon capture. Anthropological and museum specimens are also analyzed. The Staff Scientist will be responsible for the MICADAS operation and training including peripheral sample preparation devices. Peripheral equipment includes the Automated Graphitization Equipment (AGE3), a CHS2 (Carbonate Handling System), a Pneumatic Sample Press (PSP), a Gas Interphase System (GIS), and Tube Sealing Equipment (TSE) from IonPlus. Two Elementar Elemental Analyzers are also utilized with the GIS and the AGE3 for gas and graphite measurements.
Essential Duties
1. User Training : Provide advanced training and guidance to users of the research Experiment Support : Collaborate with researchers on experimental design, execution, data analysis, and troubleshooting within the research Facility / Instrument Support : Manage and oversee research projects within the research Technique Development : Lead the implementation and optimization of advanced techniques and methodologies and develop standard operating procedures for research core Data Analysis / Interpretation : Analyze and interpret complex scientific data, generating meaningful insights and Equipment Procurement : Assist in the selection, acquisition, and maintenance of research core Professional Development : Stay updated with emerging research trends and technologies. Participate in professional development activities and scientific Scientific Participation : Contribute scientific data for manuscript preparation and grant proposals9. Staff Training and Mentoring : Contribute to the training and mentoring of junior staff Vendor Relations : Manage vendor relationships, negotiates contracts, and evaluates new technologies for optimal procurement Education and Outreach : Contribute to education and outreach activities within the core, including tours, events, etc.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of skills, education, and experience.
Required Skill / Ability 1 :
Ability to maintain an ordered and dustless daily work environment is critical.
Required Skill / Ability 2 :
Demonstrate ability to independently develop and follow protocols and standard operation procedures to process samples.
Required Skill / Ability 3 :
Mechanical skills relevant to maintenance, trouble shooting, and repair of scientific instruments.
Required Skill / Ability 4 :
Good interpersonal and communication skills are required. Be able to show the ability to teach and assist faculty and students in equipment operation.
Required Skill / Ability 5 :
Monitor workload, timeline, schedules, and update team and users on sample preparation equipment and availability.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :
A Master’s or Doctorate Degree performing radiocarbon analyses and sample preparation is preferred, or a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and five years of related experience in a research development facility or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with radiocarbon dating and sample preparation and analysis.
