Position Focus:
Serving as a member of the Yale University Chaplain’s Office, the Chaplain Associate provides program development and facilitation to help achieve the chaplaincy goals of creating a hospitable and inclusive community, drawing on diverse religious, philosophical and ethical traditions to promote the spiritual, ethical, intellectual, and physical wellbeing of students, faculty, and staff. The Chaplain Associate collaborates with campus colleagues on a range of programs and services and provides pastoral care and spiritual guidance for students and other members of the University community.

Essential Duties
1. Develops and implements a range of programs such as retreats, service opportunities, workshops, clubs, public events, and other activities that engage and nurture students’ spiritual and religious lives and foster respect and mutual understanding among people of different faiths and cultures, as well as actively promoting dialogue within the University and community toward that end. 2. Works closely with all members of the chaplaincy team to create and implement multi-faith and other emerging initiatives. 3. Develops new ideas and concepts for program themes, materials, and resources to supplement, expand, or replace existing program components. Evaluates submissions for application-based programs such as the Chaplain’s Office Service Grant program. 4. Evaluates program effectiveness, investigates trends, and recommends and implement modifications to improve program effectiveness. 5. Develops and maintains relationships with religious and social justice programs, offices and departments in the University and New Haven communities to coordinate program business and to accomplish program objectives and ensures cooperative efforts are enhanced and available resources are utilized. 6. Represents the Chaplain’s Office and provides program information to the University and the public. 7. Coordinates outreach and communication efforts including preparing and supervising the production of promotional materials and/or publications, web site design and content, designing ads and fliers, and developing plans and schedules for release of publicity materials. 8. Serves on various committees and attends professional meetings, including but not limited to Yale Religious Ministries 9. Monitors, verifies and reconciles expenditure of budgeted funds. 10. Supervise student employees and student volunteers. 11. As appropriate, may be involved in pastoral care provided to various groups on campus. 12. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum of two years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Depth of experience in spiritual and religious leadership, including the ability to counsel, teach, create and facilitate dynamic student programming, lead rituals or communal spiritual practices, collaborate across diverse communities, within and between distinct religious traditions.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Demonstrated effectiveness in counseling, advising, supporting, and inspiring young adults. Capacity to nurture the spiritual life of students, both individually and communally.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Experience designing and facilitating curricular and/or co-curricular programming.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Demonstrated effectiveness in framing discussions and facilitating difficult dialogues across differences.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Demonstrated personal character traits of integrity, maturity, collegiality and a deep commitment to equity, inclusion and diversity.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
MDiv or equivalent degree in religious leadership, practice, or chaplaincy; have graduated within the last five years; demonstrated experience and interest in student leadership.
