Full job description
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Greet visitors entering the shelter, and answer phones, in a professional, friendly and non-judgmental manner. Direct the public and provide accurate information as appropriate.
2. Complete all Animal Shelter Manager (ASM) transactions, pursuant to the ASM guide, to include: animal intake, animal adoptions and fosters, returns to shelter, returns to owner, lost and found, recording of payments and donations and issuing receipts for all monetary transactions, with a data entry error rate of less than 5%.
3. As part of the intake process, take the animals’ picture and upload it into ASM, print a kennel card, and create a folder. Set up the animal for required vaccines in the system.
4. Counsel potential adopters/fosters in selecting a pet that fits their lifestyle, discuss the responsibilities of pet ownership, give information about specific animals and explain the adoption process to inquiring adopters/fosters.
5. Listen to customers and provide effective and courteous responses and remedies to their questions and needs.
6. Know which animals are available for adoption and the temperaments and personalities of these pets. Check with the kennel techs when unsure on temperaments and personalities.
7. Utilize downtime to audit ASM for yourself and others, upgrade pet pictures, and publish photo to Facebook of incoming strays and adoptions.
8. Be knowledgeable of kennel set ups for intake, when needed, in the situation where all kennel techs are outside. Treat kennel techs with courtesy and respect. Use handheld radios to locate a tech.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
1. Possess strong oral, written and listening skills.
2. Possess attention to detail and the ability to be careful and thorough in completing work tasks.
3. Knowledge of pet breeds, typical dog and cat behavior.
4. Basic computer skills necessary to maintain and update the shelter’s software system, Animal Shelter Manager.
5. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
6. Ability to provide information correctly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
7. Ability to deal with the public in an effective, patient, and courteous manner, while always using professional mannerisms.
