We serve the students of Houston, Texas, the 4th largest city across the United States. There are over 20 public-school districts and other great public charter school options within Houston’s city limits serving our increasing population. To put it simply, you will engage with Houston area leaders, families, and community members, building a network of like-minded supporters to advance YES Prep’s equity mission. Our system exists to support student learning, but we know we can’t only educate. The families we serve deserve holistic support, and each one has unique needs and concerns. You will identify large-scale opportunities for impact and deliver the community resources to meet those needs.
Acting as the Project Lead for the Houston Endowment Voter Engagement grant
- Acting as the lead for grant administration: set and drive project goals, develop strategies for increasing impact, track grant metrics, and complete reports to multiple funders and donors
- Managing grant budget, ensuring appropriate and full utilization of grant funds within the 3-year grant period; handle the ordering and receiving of grant supplies as well as campus distribution of materials
- Collaborating with grant partners (Houston Endowment, Leadership for Educational Equity, Murmuration) in order to ensure grant goals are met
- Liaising with fellow grantees (Houston Community College, Alief ISD, Aldine ISD, etc) to share best practices and collaborate where possible
- Planning and leading Why We Vote events at every campus with a class of graduating seniors, working with campus staff to ensure attendance and event engagement are high
- Leading additional work as necessary to hit the grant goals outlined in the application
- Identifying issues that negatively impact YES Prep’s ability to hit organizational goals and source community resources that address these mission critical issues
- Building a strong network of community organizations to serve YES Prep students and families and provide resources that address mission critical issues
- Collaborating with other high performing Houston charter management organizations, non-profit organizations, and governmental offices to align efforts and maximize impact for YES students
Embedding civic engagement within the YES Prep culture
- Project managing the YES Prep Votes campaign: set and drive project goals, develop strategies for increasing impact, manage the relationships with project vendors, track grant metrics, and complete reports to multiple funders and donors
- Leading a team of teachers in their stipend roles on the YES Prep Votes campaign, developing their skills and expertise in civic engagement and ensuring that each campus hits the grant targets
- Working directly with the Managing Director of Engagement and Advocacy to accomplish YES Prep legislative and lawmaker engagement goals
Collaborating with YES Prep Home Office and campus teams
- Stand in for the Managing Director of Advocacy in meetings representing YES Prep (includes meetings with state officials, city leaders, etc)
- Developing and implementing (in close collaboration with the Development and Recruitment and Enrollment Teams) an effective plan to leverage community relationships toward key organizational goals around fundraising and enrollment
- Directing community engagement for all YES Prep signature events and spearhead new community partner events that create value for students and families
- Developing and implement protocols that clear the path for existing YES Prep campuses to create and maintain relationships with their broader community
- Supporting YES Prep’s New School Launch efforts in galvanizing the community around the opening of each new YES Prep campus
- Additional duties as assigned
THE PERSON
- Ability to work outside of normal hours and on weekends
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year educational institution
- 2 years of relevant experience in community organizing, advocacy, or local government
- Belief in and commitment to the mission and core value of YES Prep Public Schools
- Openness to giving and receiving frequent feedback
- Ability to maintain emotional control under stress
- Ability to work urgently in a fast-paced and results-oriented environment

THE PERKS
- Compensation – This position is an exempt, salaried position; offers commensurate with experience.
- Health and Supplemental Insurance – A $0 monthly medical option that includes $600 towards a Health Savings Account, in addition to a variety of supplemental benefits including Dental, Vision, Disability, Life, etc. Employees must work 20 hours a week to be eligible for a full spectrum of benefits, and 10 hours a week minimum for medical benefits.
Retirement Plans – Participation in Teacher Retirement System of Texas and a 457b Retirement Plan.
- Paid Time Off – Employees working 20 hours a week receive 15 days of Paid Time Off in addition to the system closures during the Academic Calendar.
