What are the responsibilities and job description for the Counselor - Mi-Te-Na position at YMCA Camping Services?
Camp Mi-Te-Na is seeking Counselors who wish to impact the lives of today's youth. Camp Mi-Te-Na is located on Halfmoon Lake in Alton, NH. Counselors will be living and working with children at an all-boys YMCA overnight camp. You will have shared responsibility for leading and supervising a group of approximately eight to ten campers ensuring each camper’s health, safety, and participation in all aspects of camp life.
This responsibility demands enthusiasm, humor, patience, energy, maturity, focus, and creativity continually to be an effective leader. Previous experience at an overnight camp is preferred, however, we train on-site. Applicants must have the ability to connect with youth ages 7-15 years old. Staff will live in cabins with campers and also are the staff for the program activities. Programs can include the following; sports staff, waterfront swim instructors/lifeguards, target sports instructors, ropes course instructors, and creative arts. Skills in these program activities are preferred.
This position is at an all-boys overnight camp. The employee is expected to live on site for 9 weeks beginning Seasonal Camp Mi-Te-Na June 13 2025 - August 16 2025. Time off is scheduled throughout the season.
The pay is Seasonal Salaried - 350$ to 380$ . Room and board are included. Staff will gain lifelong skills that will be transferable to many future jobs and career choices.
Below are some expectations of the job:
Attend and participate in staff training week (one week before camp opening)
Meet and greet incoming campers and parents; help with check out of campers during change days
Assist with planning and leadership of assigned program instruction areas, village activities, special events, and evening programs
Attend all meals with assigned cabin group and supervise them in the dining hall as to proper manners, cleanup behavior, and eating habits
Plan, supervise, and participate in all cabin-orientated activities; and supervise assigned campers in all total camp activities
Assist campers to adjust to understanding and enjoyment of camp schedules, activities, and camp life
Assist campers in observing positive daily habits
Use positive forms of control in maintaining camper discipline - reinforcement of good behaviors always desired over punishment of bad behavior
Instruct and/or assist in assigned daily program activities (sports, hobbies, waterfront)
Become a functional member of the camp staff family
Exhibit an ability to take guidance and supervision (from the senior staff)
Complete all assigned evaluations and camp paperwork on time as required
Maintain cleanliness and safety in the cabin, village, and all camp areas and activities
Pay attention to your own mental and physical condition, taking necessary measures to ensure your health and well-being - inform the Camp Director of special needs as they arise
Work and live by the camp’s established procedures, practices, and regulations
