General Function
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director the Lifeguard shall be accountable and responsible for the safety of all patrons entering the pool and whirlpool facility. The incumbent will act in accordance with the YMCA philosophy and mission.
Skills and Qualifications
1. Prior education and or experience working with people and working with activity appointed to.
2. Highly motivated and willing to work independently.
3. Willing to take the Red Cross First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Lifeguard certifications before start date. We will train you for FREE!
4. New Staff Orientation completed within 30 days of hire.
5. Demonstrate a positive attitude with people of all abilities.
6. Have an understanding and appreciation for the YMCA and its philosophies and beliefs.
Principal Activities
1. Be on duty 5 minutes prior to work assignment, keeping track of one’s own work hours. Responsible to sign-in and out completely and successfully.
2. A swimsuit must be worn while on duty. Lifeguard must be readily identifiable with guard shirt, suit and/or shorts.
3. Lifeguard shall have rescue tube, CPR mask and whistle on them at all times.
4. The lifeguard is responsible for preventing accidents by encouraging situations that are within the guidelines of established safety procedures.
-Enforce safety rules at all times.
-Provide supervision for all participants in the pool and whirlpool facilities with continuous scanning procedures.
-Provide discipline and control measures while being fair and consistent at all times.
-Keep the pool deck area safe and clean.
-Position self in the guard chair, standing or patrolling on deck.
-Administer Deep Water Test to patrons under the age of 13.
-No reading, eating or engaging in long conversations with anyone.
-Safety rope dividing the shallow and deep end shall be put across during any open or family swim times.
-Never leave the pool deck unattended.
5. Responsible for the rescue and emergency care of any accident victim in and about the pool.
6. Responsible to follow emergency procedures for life-threatening situations, fire and severe weather. Posted in pools/guard room/ and Aquatic Office.
7. Responsible to follow OSHA guidelines for clean up of any bodily fluids on deck and follow pool contamination guidelines for any bodily fluids in the pool or whirlpool water.
8. Responsible to follow guidelines for slide usage, birthday parties, and group swim.
9. Responsible to follow closing procedures and the end of the day.
10.Responsible to attend all required staff meetings and trainings.
11.Responsible to keep all certifications current and on file.
12.Responsible to find a qualified substitute in the event a sub is needed.
13.Responsible to abide by YMCA policies and guidelines, pool rules and regulations and all state health codes as applicable to swimming pools.
14.Responsible to contact Supervisor and/or Aquatics Director in the event a situation arises in the pool or whirlpool area that is a distraction for the Lifeguard on duty.
15.Professionalism is required at all times. Shall maintain a positive self-image through tact and genuine concern for patrons and all staff.
16.Notice of resignation must be in writing to the Aquatics Director two weeks from the last scheduled day of work.

Pay: $12.00 - $13.00 per hour
