POSITION SUMMARY

The Health Officer is responsible for the supervision of health and cleanliness standards with a focus on Day Camp programs, facilities, and campers. Responsibilities include but are not limited to : organizing Day Camp health forms, working with camp nurse to control and dispense medicine to campers and staff, and ensuring the health and wellness of staff and campers in Day Camp, along with supporting other aspects of Camp programming both administratively and programmatically.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

Identify and Meet Camper / Staff Needs

  • Organize and file camper health forms.
  • Help organize and update Day Camp daily rosters (group and bus rosters).
  • Organize and update Health Log Documentation daily
  • Keep records of health management.
  • Communicate camper concerns to staff and kitchen staff where needed.
  • Control and dispense camper meds where needed.
  • Clean and disinfect areas of camp that may pose health concerns.
  • Inventory health supplies and order more when needed.
  • Track, organize, and return Day Camp Lost and Found
  • Be a patient, enthusiastic role model for our campers and staff.
  • Assume a counselor role where needed.
  • Help facilitate safe and fun programs for campers based on the YMCA core values.
  • Identify, minimize, and eliminate (where possible) any risks that could cause accidents.

Carry Out Camp Programs

  • Assist in preparing and facilitating daily aspects of Camp programs.
  • Be present and available to parents during times of drop off, pick up.
  • Prepare healthy snacks for the end of the day.
  • Keep first aid kits around camp stocked and ready.
  • Monitor health of staff.
  • Assume the role and duties of counselor as determined by the Program Director. This may include staying in a cabin with campers or leading a trail group.
  • Administrative Responsibilities

  • Ensure programs follow established guidelines and ACA standards.
  • Keep organized record of health forms, camper / staff medicines, and log books
  • Assist with the organizing and updating of Day camp rosters and records
  • Assist in general cleaning of camp facilities daily as needed.
  • Assist in cleaning, organizing, and closing of the Day Camp pavilion and other DC program areas.
  • Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of Camp Manitou-Lin and the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids.

    COMPENSATION

    65.00 - $70.00 per day; Seasonal; Non -Exempt

  • On-site accommodations are available.
  • Meals are provided Sunday - Friday. Staff are allowed to remain on site during the weekends throughout their seasonal employment if they choose. Scheduled time off will be granted each day.

  • Requirements : QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 19 years of age and high school graduate or equivalent
  • Documented experience working with children and a desire to work outdoors
  • Organizational skills
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision
  • Ability to relate to one’s peer group
  • Ability to give supervision and guidance to staff
  • Ability to assist in teaching an activity
  • Ability to plan programs and carry them out
  • Ability to teach leadership skills
  • Ability to teach and role model the Core Values of the YMCA and use of 21st century life skills
  • Good character and ability to adapt to camp setting; enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
  • Lifeguard certification and / or High Ropes and Adventure Certification preferred
  • Ability to administer basic CPR, First Aid, and basic health care to all guests of Camp Manitou-Lin
  • CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • First Aid Certification required
  • CPR Certification required
  • Blood Borne Pathogen training
  • State of Michigan criminal background clearance (ICHAT)

Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, outside weather elements, and extreme heat.

    TRAVEL

    0-5% of local travel within the state of Michigan; occasional out-of-state travel may be required for educational conferences or training.
