POSITION SUMMARY :

The Sports and Wellness Director leads center wellness staff members in all member connection and retention initiatives related to the wellness center and wellness programming. The Director will manage the day-to-day operations of sports and wellness programs and operations. This position provides direct leadership for personal training, group training, group exercise, healthy living programs, youth conditioning programs, and wellness floor staff; directly supervising and developing these staff teams to provide the highest quality service and exceptional member experience for all in small to mid-sized centers. This position is responsible for managing the sports and wellness-related financials, relationship building, supervision of staff, volunteer development and for being a YMCA advocate in the community. A strong focus is placed on driving a superior member and youth experience, enhancing the membership connection / engagement, thereby leading to increasing member satisfaction and retention. This position employs a continuous improvement model to meet and / or exceed goals for satisfaction, budgeted revenue / expense goals.

Qualifications :

  • BA / BS in exercise science or related field; or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in sports and wellness programming, with at least one year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must obtain and maintain current certification from a national accredited organization in personal training, group exercise or similar discipline.
  • Must obtain within 30 days of employment and maintain current certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED and Oxygen Administration.
  • Must understand how to build relationships and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Have the ability to lead a strong staff team that is focused on creating a welcoming environment and providing a superior member experience for all members, at all times.
  • Must have a proven track record and a passion for exercise, nutrition, healthy living and helping others live a healthier lifestyle. Additional skills in developing small groups, personal training, and group exercise are needed.
  • Highly motivated with the consistent ability to meet / exceed goals.
  • Self-driven with the ability to set effective team and individual goals and take ownership for results.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and adapt to changing contexts and priorities.
  • Ability to understand, adapt to and interact with diverse people, teams, perspectives and cultures.

Essential Functions

  • Provides direct leadership and assures the well-being for each participant and staff in line with YMCA of the USA guidelines and Association policies in accordance with their training
  • Focus on program growth and quality including, best practices and the elevation of wellness and sports programming. This includes personal training, group training, group exercise, healthy living programs, youth conditioning programs, new programs, special events.
  • Maintain and develop program budgets, curriculums, staffing, and plans including but not limited to personal training, group fitness, offsite programming, and special interest or mission-based programming.
  • Direct responsibility to hire, develop, motivate and retain a team of sports and wellness staff members and volunteers committed to the YMCA’s mission.
  • Actively manage equipment, contracted service workers, cleanliness and safety of the wellness center.
  • Plan and promote seasonal programs such as youth programs, camp, leagues, tournaments and contests.
  • Develops, maintains, and facilitates positive relationships with and between volunteers, members, program participants, staff, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement
  • Collaborates regularly with center leadership, program operations, and other related teams to ensure the member experience is consistent, integrated and aligned with member needs.
  • Ensures all YMCA of Greater Hartford sports and wellness standards and best practices are implemented and followed. Applies YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to best practices, emergency procedures, medical and disciplinary situations, and child abuse prevention.
  • Ensures all sports and wellness staff are properly trained and prepared for emergency situations. This includes implementing and following training requirements in addition to ensuring proper reporting of all incidents / accidents according to risk management procedures.
  • Stays up to date and assists with all facility changes including but not limited to events, holidays, and schedule changes
  • Communicates with staff, participants, and parents in a timely and professional and answers questions that will support a positive experience with the Y
  • Maintains physical presence at all times while on duty, remains aware of surroundings and participants ensuring a pleasant, professional, and safe environment
  • Active leader in membership retention goals and in the Annual Giving Campaign
  • Attends all mandatory meetings and trainings
