Youth Development Assistants play a key role in creating and maintaining a positive atmosphere that promotes education, healthy living, safety, creativity, anti-bullying, and inclusion among all youth grades K-6th.
Shifts: 3:00pm-6:00pm, M-F*
*Flexible schedule/arrival times welcome.

Hourly Rates Range*
$11.15/hour - $12.50/hour
*increases to rates are case-by-case based on experience and education relevant to to the field of youth development
Responsibilities
The Youth Development Assistant provides direct supervision to a group of children in a YMCA before and after school program. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers and school community. Assists in the coordination, planning, supervision and implementation of all activities. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall before and after school experience
- Supervises a group of children.
- Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
- Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
- Attends staff meetings and trainings.
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
- Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
- Consistently demonstrates and reinforces the values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility
Consistently demonstrate positive interaction with all children; talk to them and treat them with dignity and respect.
- Help children to develop a positive self-esteem and sense of self-worth
- Consistently demonstrate and reinforce the values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility.
- Encourage parents to participate or volunteer in special events or on field trips
- Express appreciation for families’ interest in their child(s) participation in the program
Some positions may have additional responsibilities such as:
- Insure that the program is operated in a safe and purposeful manner, insuring that all licensing and YMCA guidelines are met or exceeded.
- Implement group activity plan as assigned and according to state licensing and YMCA guidelines.
- Communicate on a daily basis to families regarding the behavior of their children positive and negative (make sure to have parents review and sign corrective behavior reports).
Qualifications
Youth Assistant Job Qualifications:
- Minimum age of 16.
- Understanding of and ability to apply principles of quality youth development and programming.
- Sensitivity to clientele and staff representing a variety of family, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Active engagement with and supervision of children requiring physical stamina, alertness and emotional stability.
- Ability to work with others in a team environment.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings requiring physical stamina, alertness and emotional stability.
