JOB TITLE: Health & Wellness/Fitness Management Internship
REPORTS TO: Program Director and/or Program Coordinator
FLSA TYPE: Non-Exempt
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
- Student interns will gain experience in individual and group exercise prescription, member services, health promotion, program development and implementation.
- Student interns will assist with supervising fitness equipment maintenance, fitness center management, adult fitness testing, evaluation, and exercise prescription.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate in the planning, design, and implementation of health promotion and/or fitness programs at all sites.
- Weekly group fitness classes
- Educational incentive programs
- Fitness incentive programs
- One-on-one wellness coaching
- Group leadership
- Contributing to the Branch Newsletter through research and article submission
- Other miscellaneous duties as assigned by supervisor
Participate in all phases of the Fitness Assessment and Personal Training Programs.
- Observe and participate in new member orientations and fitness testing protocol
- Observe certified personal trainers in exercise prescription
- Observe participants in their exercise programs to ensure safety
- Observe participants in transition from rehabilitation programs to the YMCA
- Provide exercise leadership and instruction to all members / employees serve and develop additional management skills necessary for the proper functioning of the wellness center
Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Must stay current in CPRPR/AED/O2 and First Aid certifications, renewed annually, YMCA provided if needed.
- Must complete Redwoods Trainings within 30 days of hire and renewed annually.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Academic preparation in the field of health promotion and wellness leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree (anatomy, physiology, fitness assessment techniques, exercise prescription, and nutrition) or Graduate degree in a related field.
- Practical experience in exercise testing and prescription
- Be a positive role model.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Desire to develop group leadership skills.
