What are the responsibilities and job description for the Group Exercise Instructor position at YMCA OF GREATER SPRINGFIELD INC?
We are looking for a Group Exercise Instructor for promoting fitness and wellness through the YMCA Group Exercise program with a commitment to serving the general population in their pursuit of health and well-being. Following is a list of responsibilities:
Maintain Healthy Lifestyle Principles, Foundation of Group Exercise, Cardio & Step preferably at the YMCA or, other accredited certifications approved by the Director.
- Lead quality programs in the group fitness classes which are energizing, fun and safe in order to accomplish YMCA’s mission and goals and as directed by the Coordinator/Director.
- Attend all department staff trainings and meetings. Special circumstances that prevent attending must be reported to the Coordinator/Director prior to the meeting.
Report accidents, injuries and incidents to your Coordinator/Director as well as fill out incident reports within 24 hours of occurrence.
If unable to facilitate a class, secure a substitute and inform the Coordinator/Director prior to absence.
Follow all class formats on time as they have been designed from the beginning to the end of class.
Maintain all equipment used in all Group Fitness rooms and assist in keeping all rooms in proper order.
Follow department procedures for attendance (be punctual for all classes), cleanliness, locking exercise rooms, maintenance and storage of all equipment used in all Group Fitness rooms and assisting in keeping all rooms in proper order.
Follow YMCA policies and procedures and positively promote its programs to members and the community.

QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to work with a diverse population and exhibit core YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
- Demonstrated excellent customer service and communication skills.
CPR, First Aid and AED; National Certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise Certification
- Certification in areas of expertise; i.e. Les Mills (Cardio, Strength, Yoga, Cycle, Pilates, Active Older Adults, Zumba, Spinning, P90x, Insanity, etc.)
- Attend and successfully complete within 90 days of hire: Orientation in Healthy Living at the Y including online courses.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- One (1) year of experience teaching group fitness classes.
- Ability to teach/sub at both branches.
While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to:
Walk, sit, stand, bend or reach for extended periods of time;
Move around the work environment independently;
Communicate via computer, multi-line phone and smartphone;
Push, pull, or lift up to 50 pounds for short periods of time;
Frequently exposed to fitness or machinery and cleaning chemicals directly; ability to conduct classes and activities relating to fitness.
The noise level in the work place is usually moderate, but may vary based on a number of external factors.
