Job Title: YMCA Reads! Program Tutor
Job Description: The YMCA READS! Program is an exciting literacy/mentoring initiative for kindergarten through fifth-grade students, taking place at Pinellas County Schools throughout St. Petersburg, FL. The program uses curriculum-based literacy instruction to help struggling readers in areas of phonetics, sight word recognition, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. As a tutor, you would provide assistance and support to the program coordinator during YMCA Reads! hours to ensure that outlined program goals and procedures are being achieved.
Duties:
- Assists in student supervision, help maintain order, and positively reinforce "good choices" when appropriate.
- Assists students to and from the restroom.
- Assists coordinator in picking up and dropping off students around the school.
- Oversees and ensures that mandatory procedures are being followed when parents or guardian are picking up students.
- Maintains necessary paper work: testing, volunteer and student sign in and out logs.
- Required to teach basic reading skills using lessons developed by the YREADS Coordinator using all curricula.
- Attends required abuse risk management training.
- Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
- Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
Qualifications:
- Must be 16 years or older
- Desire or interest in learning about literacy intervention
- Experience working with children in an educational environment
- Compassion and empathy for struggling readers
- Tutoring experience strongly preferred
Pay & Perks: $15/hour. After school hours, 4 days per week. Approximately 15 hours per week. Excellent benefits including retirement savings and child care before/after school upon meeting eligibility requirements. Free individual YMCA membership for employee and discount for family.
