POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Teacher is responsible for carrying out all duties in accordance with NC Child Care Licensing Standards and providing a quality environment in which each child's growth and development is assured. The Lead Teacher is also responsible for managing the site in the absence of the Child Care Director. In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greensboro is responsible for carrying out our promise to strengthen the foundations of community with focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility while upholding our values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- To develop and execute an on-going program of activities that contribute to the care, growth and development of children.
- To supervise and evaluate co-teachers and volunteers.
- To maintain a physical environment which conforms to defined program standards.
- Organize classroom space into functional areas that are recognizable by children and adults.
- To observe physical conditions of children and make referrals of suspected child abuse to Site Coordinator and report incident appropriately.
- To plan daily activities jointly with co-teachers to reflect curriculum areas and individualized instruction utilizing small, large and individual activities, assuring that lesson plans are developmentally appropriate and that reports are accurate and on time.
- To provide constant supervision of all enrolled children and maintain appropriate classroom management techniques.
- To ensure that needed supplies and equipment are available, and that all resources (including volunteers, community resources, and field trips) are used appropriately for classroom enrichment.
- To attend all required meetings and training events in order to strengthen skills and upgrade professional growth.
- To maintain a professional relationship with parents and staff while maintaining confidentiality of information related to parents and children.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists Day Care Director in supervising assistant teachers as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in Early Childhood Education or a related field from four-year college or university and two years related experience and/or training is preferred; Alternatively, an AS Degree in Child Development or a Child Development Credential will be accepted; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money. REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both children and their parents across all socio-economic segments of the community.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Must have completed requirements for the NC Early Childhood Credential. CPR/AED, First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogen training required upon hire and must remain current throughout employment.
