Job Title: Gym Monitor
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Reports to: Programs Director
Shift Availability: Monday-Thursday 4pm-8pm
Saturday: 9am-1pm
Sunday: 11am-4pm
Position Summary:
This role supports the YMCA’s mission by creating a safe, clean, and welcoming environment in the basketball gym, locker rooms, elevated walking track, and surrounding areas. The Gym Monitor collaborates with the Fitness Attendant and Building Supervisor to ensure smooth operations, program setup and takedown, risk management, and facility oversight.
Essential Functions:
- Risk Management: Patrols the gym, walking track, and locker room areas to prevent accidents, theft, vandalism, and disruptive behavior. Completes incident reports for any personal injury, property damage, theft, or other unusual situations.
- Facility Oversight: Monitor basketball gym usage to ensure safety and prevent disruptions. Perform regular checks of locker rooms and bathrooms, replenishing supplies as needed. Oversee and monitor the elevated walking track to ensure safety and compliance with YMCA policies.
- Enforcement of Rules and Policies: Interpret and sensibly enforce YMCA rules, regulations, and policies. Observe member behavior and caution or take appropriate action with policy violators. Monitor gym and program areas to ensure members adhere to YMCA guidelines. Maintain a visible and approachable presence to patrons and staff.
- Program Support: Set up and break down equipment and spaces for scheduled activities and events. Assist with crowd control and support large events as needed. Work to resolve scheduling or usage conflicts within gym spaces.
- Collaboration and Communication: Work with the Fitness Attendant and Building Supervisor to address member needs, safety concerns, and overall facility operations. Communicate effectively with members to promote program participation and enforce facility guidelines.
- Cleanliness and Maintenance: Maintain cleanliness standards in monitored areas, ensuring a hygienic and pleasant environment. Performing light custodial duties in locker room and bathroom areas as needed. Report maintenance needs and incidents promptly.
- Emergency Response: Provide first aid and CPR as needed. Be familiar with and implement YMCA emergency procedures when necessary.
Qualifications:
- Minimum age of 18.
- High school diploma preferred.
- At least one (1) year of experience in safety, security, or facility oversight is desirable.
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications preferred.
- Ability to work independently and take decisive action within limits of authority and responsibility.
- Ability to interact positively with YMCA members, guests, and staff, demonstrating good communication and listening skills.
- Willingness to continue acquiring knowledge relevant to the position through printed materials and on-site training opportunities.
