General Position Description

The Teacher Assistant/Sub supports the Lead Teacher by helping to create a caring and safe environment for the children and assisting in activities to improve the overall care and quality of education. They must be able to communicate, listen and work well with others in a team environment. Assisting the Lead Teacher in implementing a quality school age or preschool educational program and in developing positive relationships with the children and their parents. The Teacher Assistant observes and documents children’s interest and progress, and relays that information back to parents and staff. The Teacher Assistant is responsible for helping implement developmentally appropriate activities based on children’s interests and needs under the direction of the Lead Teacher.

This position reports to: Lead Teacher of the class you are in for the day or Center Director

Key Responsibilities

· Follow all YMCA program policies, State Licensing and SUTQ, Health Department, & CACFP rules and regulations.

· Manage children in large or small groups

· Assist in the implementation of school age program activities and encourage participation by children.

· Actively engaged with children to promote positive teacher-child interactions.

· Actively engage in activities; manage cleanliness, order, and availability of classroom materials.

· Maintain frequent communications with parents through informal discussions and daily reports.

· Encourage self-help and good hygiene through behavior modeling.

· Help ensures smooth, daily transitions for children.

· Complete nightly cleaning/closing duties.

· Maintain personal professional development plan to ensure continuous quality improvement.

· All other duties assigned by Lead Teacher or Director of Child Care

Employment Requirement

  • Must clear BCI & FBI background check
  • Must clear JFS 01175 Request for a Background Check for Child Care (Statewide Automated Child Welfare Information System (SACWIS)
  • Must successfully complete JFS 02196 Employee Medical Statement for Child Care.
  • Infant/child CPR and First Aid Certifications.
  • Child Abuse Prevention and Communicable Disease Certifications.
  • Attend at least 30 hours a specialized training every two years based on hire date.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

· Minimum of 1-2 years of professional education experience.

· High energy.

· Ability to work well with others.

· Strong oral and written communication skills and basic computer skills.

· An understanding of child development.

· Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Educational Requirements

· Minimum-Enrolled in 2 year certificate in Early Childhood Education, High School Diploma or GED AND complete School Age Teacher Assistant Endorsement within 6 months of hire.

· Preferred- School Age Teacher Assistant Endorsement AND enrolled in AA program in the field of ECE/(or approved related field) OR CPL 2

Physical Requirements

· Requirements include the ability to take frequent walks, use hands and fingers, handle objects, tools or controls, talk to and hear voices at many levels. May also be required to kneel, bend, squat or crawl.

· A specific vision ability will be required including the ability to see up close and up to a certain distance, to see colors, have peripheral vision and depth perception.

· Regularly stand, sit, walk, run, bend, squat, climb, crawl, balance and stoop.

· Move as the position requires.

· Ability to regularly lift and/or more 10lbs frequently, frequently lift and/or move up to 20lbs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.

· Be frequently exposed to outdoor elements from wet and or humid weather (follow licensing regulations).

· Teacher Assistant/Sub

o Assist with the completion of the Weekly Lesson Planning while following standards listed below if needed

-Building the Primary Classroom Curriculum Book, K-12 Standards Resource Guide, Ohio’s Core Knowledge & Competencies, Teaching Strategies Gold (preschool)

o Interacting with children during all times of the day. (Meals, free choice, lesson plan activity, gross motor time etc.)

o Assist in Children’s Portfolio (when doing activity do following)

Collect Work Samples, Take Photo’s, Notes

o Assist in completion of Children’s Informal Assessment

§ Complete within 60 days (ASQ/ASQ-SE for preschool & SE Assessment for schoolage)

o Review each child’s Developmental or Educational Goals.

o Review each child’s Family Information Sheets.

o Fill in for Transition Plan with Preschool Teachers if Lead Teacher is unable to attend.

o Complete specialized training in timely matter (at least 30 hours every two years).

o Assist with the completion of the Annual Goal for both Preschool and School Age Room Assessments (SUTQ)

o Attend/help facilitate Literacy Night (spring of each year)

Cleaning/Closing Responsibilities

o Sweeping all floors with scrub brush

o Sweeping all carpeted area’s

o Bathroom’s-Restock toilet paper, clean mirrors, clean toilet bowl including underneath bowl and flushing pipes, sweep and mop

o Disinfect all tables and chairs

o Replace paper towels if needed and disinfected outside

o Wash dinner dishes

o Check interest area’s and make sure supplies/toys are put away properly. Move to shelve to sweep under.

· Licensing/YMCA Policies

o Attendance done when and child arrives and leaves. Update board and communicate with other staff member number of children.

o Complete incident reports anytime first aid, fighting etc. is done.

o Fully understands and follows all licensing rules and regulations and know location of rules.

o Fully understand and follows all rules and regulations pertaining to the food program CACFP and rules and regulations set by the local Health Department pertaining to the kitchen/food preparations.

o Follows all evacuation rules and procedures. Knows location where information is located.

o Read and fully understands YMCA Child Care Staff Handbook, Sandusky County YMCA Handbook, and YMCA Child Development Handbook.

Job Type: Part-time

Schedule:

  • 4 hour shift
  • No weekends
