About This Role
Under the direction of the Youth Development Director and in collaboration with the Lead Teacher, the Teacher is responsible for managing a preschool classroom. Our preschool is open 7:30 AM–5:30 PM, with teachers working either an opening or closing shift.
In this role, you’ll:
- Foster Inclusion: Create a welcoming and respectful environment that celebrates diversity, honors the YMCA’s values, and supports the unique needs of every child and family.
- Engage in Programming: Plan and implement engaging activities consistent with YMCA goals, helping children develop socially, emotionally, and cognitively. Be hands-on, supervising, and actively participating in activities with children.
- Lead by Example: Model positive behaviors, maintain professionalism, and follow YMCA values and health guidelines (including 5-2-1-0 Let’s Go).
- Build Relationships: Develop meaningful connections with children, families, and colleagues to strengthen community ties and effectively communicate each child’s progress.
- Ensure Safety: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment, adhering to all YMCA protocols and licensing standards. Respond promptly and professionally to incidents and emergencies.
- Track & Document: Accurately maintain required documentation and data tracking.
What We’re Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent (or enrollment in a GED/HiSET program).
- At least 12 months of experience in a child care role.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- A passion for creating an inclusive and engaging learning environment for young children.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Be able to travel locally.
- Be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Complete a criminal background check, including fingerprinting through the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), prior to hire. This will be paid for by the YMCA of Southern Maine.
