What are the responsibilities and job description for the CAPS-Program Specialist position at YMCA of the East Valley?
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. CAPS (Creative Afterschool Program for Success) is our before and after school program located in 39 school sites across San Bernardino. As a Program Specialist, staff provides direction for the children and implements program curriculum in specialized craft and music.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist students develop an interest and understanding of your subject matter.
- Ensure safe and clean learning environments.
- Provide opportunities for higher level learning activities through creative and well-designed instruction.
- Must be able to interact and breakdown the barrier for the students to learn.
- Act as liaison between school administration, and All Kids Need Music
- Develop a culture of care in which students connect music to their lives and the greater community
- Utilize lessons that include singing, saying, moving, playing, listening, creating and reflecting
- Work with the District approved Game Plan curriculum in conjunction with enrichment activities to encourage appropriate playing and singing techniques and expression
- Connect curricular content to the California Arts Standards
- Collaborate with district and site staff to provide multiple performance opportunities for students to showcase their talents and passions for their peers and parents
- Develop clear classroom, behavior and performance etiquette expectations
- Provide quality, rigorous instruction; aligning authentic assessment tasks
- Maintain ongoing communication as well as positive relationships with children, parents, staff, community members and organizations.
- Provide instruction in band, choir and orchestra for 4th/5th grade students who performed at their school in the 2021/2022 school year.
- Teach, demonstrate specific program specialty, direct & assist supervision of children in order to provide safety within ratios.
- Develop and implement a creative, stimulating and challenging program for children ages 8-13 years old, in accordance with YMCA philosophy.
- Coordinate facilities with CAPS program.
- Communicate with CAPS teachers/leads on music instruction schedule.
- Provide supervision for students coming to and from Music classes to CAPS STEAM programming.
- Assist with ongoing trainings focused on Caring, Honesty, Respect, & Responsibility.
- Provide prompt leadership and assistance in emergency situations.
- Maintain a professional manner and positive attitude at all times.
- Assist the Site Leader and other leadership staff with all other tasks/responsibilities as needed.
- Follow the YMCA personnel policies, practices, salary administration plan, emergency procedures and risk management procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- One year experience working with school-aged children in a school program or in other youth-related activities.
- Must have completed at least 72 quarter units or 48 semester units at an accredited College or University, or pass the NCLB (No Child Left Behind) examination.
- Specialized certification in Music, Crafts/Arts, Dance, etc.

Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate
program activities. Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings. - At least one year experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.

- Available to work 5 days a week as assigned during program hours (varies by grade level) & must have reliable transportation.

CPR, First Aid, certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of
hire date. Upon initial hiring, employees are required to obtain current negative TB test, drug test clearance and background clearance.
