What are the responsibilities and job description for the Battalion Chief position at York Area United Fire and Rescue?
York Area United Fire and Rescue in York, PA is opening the promotion/employment process for the position of Battalion Chief. This position is an exempt management position within the departments’ command staff. This particular opening is a shift commander position, working a 24 on/48 off shift rotation.
Starting salary for 2025 is $94,950.18. Health insurance includes medical, dental, vision and hearing. An Employer provided Employee Assistance Program is also included.
Retirement is a Cash Balance Plan administered through Pennsylvania Municipal Retirement System with 5% employee/12% employer contributions.
Command staff are provided with department vehicles with a requirement to reside within twenty (20) minutes of the department’s primary service area.
All uniform and PPE Items are employer provided.
Employer provided training opportunities are abundant.
Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience (Career service preferred, but not mandatory)
- Associate’s Degree in Fire Science.
- Minimum of five years experience in the field of fire prevention and fire safety matters.
- Minimum of five years experience in the field of the technical aspects of firefighting equipment and their use in fire fighting and control.
- Minimum of five years experience in the field as it relates to dealing with the nature and behavior of fire, methods to combat fire, characteristics of various materials during combustion and the effect of extinguishing agents on various types of fires.
- Minimum of five years experience in the field of rescue operation techniques, procedures and practices.
- Minimum of five years experience in the field of emergency medical services.
- Five years experience as a Lieutenant, Captain or equivalent fire service management position.
- Five years experience in actively supervising fire ground operations.
- Any combination of education and experience that indicates possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed herein.
Licenses, Registrations and Certificates
- Valid driver’s license and proof of insurability.
- Fire Inspector certification from National Fire Protection Association or Building Officials and Code Administrators International preferred.
- Certified as a Fire Officer II, or higher, Instructor II, NFPA Standard 1021, Executive Fire Officer and/or Chief Fire Officer designation or equivalent.
- Certified as an Emergency Medical Technician-B or paramedic.
Process
· Interested candidates should submit a resume and letter of interest to the Fire Chief’s Office by close of business on February 21, 2025.
· Written exam will be administered in person on March 14, 2025. A list of recommended reading materials will be provided in the candidate’s application acceptance letter.
· Oral interviews and assessment centers will be conducted on March 28, 2025.
· All processes will be conducted at YAUFR Headquarters, 50 Commons Drive, York, PA 17402
