Primary Responsibilities
- Compounding Medications
- Mix, measure, and prepare medications in various forms (creams, gels, capsules, suspensions, troches, etc.).
- Follow precise formulas and safety protocols to ensure accuracy.
- Weighing & Measuring Ingredients
- Accurately measure active and inactive pharmaceutical ingredients using balances and other lab equipment.
- Ensure proper mixing and homogenization of compounds.
- Maintaining a Sterile Environment
- Work in clean rooms and laminar flow hoods for sterile compounding.
- Follow USP <795> (non-sterile) and USP <797>/<800> (sterile/hazardous) compounding guidelines.
- Labeling & Packaging Medications
- Properly label compounded medications with dosage instructions and ingredient lists.
- Package medications according to safety and regulatory standards.
- Record Keeping & Documentation
- Maintain accurate batch records, formulas, and patient prescription logs.
- Ensure compliance with pharmacy laws and regulatory requirements.
- Equipment & Facility Maintenance
- Clean and maintain compounding equipment (mortar and pestle, ointment mills, capsule machines, etc.).
- Perform quality control checks to ensure safety and accuracy.
- Collaborating with Pharmacists & Healthcare Providers
- Work closely with pharmacists to ensure compounded medications meet patient-specific needs.
- Communicate with prescribers if formulations require adjustments.
- Ensuring Compliance & Safety
- Adhere to OSHA and FDA guidelines for handling hazardous drugs.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed.
- Inventory Management
- Order, stock, and track ingredients to ensure an adequate supply.
- Monitor expiration dates and proper storage of chemicals and medications.
- Customer Service & Patient Support
- Educate patients on proper usage and storage of compounded medications.
- Assist with inquiries regarding specialized formulations.
Skills & Qualifications
- Attention to Detail – Precision in measurements and formulation.
- Knowledge of Pharmaceutical Calculations – Understanding concentrations, dilutions, and conversions.
- Sterile & Non-Sterile Compounding Techniques – Experience with USP standards.
- Regulatory Compliance – Familiarity with FDA, USP, and state board regulations.
- Technical & Mechanical Skills – Ability to use specialized compounding equipment.
