SCHOOL BUS AIDE
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Effective verbal and written communications skills
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable
Reports To: Transportation Supervisor
Job Goal
To assist students with special needs during transport to and from school and/or special activities; and ensuring the safety and sanitation of assigned vehicles.
Performance Responsibilities
- Assesses potential emergency situations on the bus and within loading and unloading zones to take appropriate action to protect the well-being of passengers.
- Assists students to provide for special needs during transport, safe loading and unloading from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport.
- Instructs students for the purpose of enforcing rules/regulations and maintaining safety.
- Monitors students to prevent distraction to the driver or injury to themselves or other students/passengers.
- Monitors students with special needs until released to the teacher, instructional assistant, parent/guardian to ensure the students’ safety.
- Prepares documentation (e.g., incident reports, passenger misconduct) to provide written support and/or conveying information.
- Reports observations and/or incidents (e.g., discipline, inappropriate social behavior) to communicate information to appropriate personnel.
- Secures students and/or equipment with restraints, tie-downs (e.g., wheelchairs, seat belts) to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
- Assists other personnel to support them in the completion of their work activities.
Specific Job Requirements

- Demonstrate a high level of initiative in job performance
- Must have sufficient agility to be able to enter and exit a school bus unassisted through the passenger entry door
- Must have sufficient agility to be able to move freely throughout the bus
- Must have sufficient agility to be able to bend, stoop, and kneel as necessary to secure students and/or equipment restraints, tie-downs (e.g., wheelchairs, seat belts) to ensure the safety and well-being of students
- Must be able to evacuate students from a bus in an emergency, including properly exiting from the rear-most floor level emergency exit and dragging a 125-lb weight 30 feet within 30 seconds
Terms of Employment:
182 days per school year; salary and work year to be established by the Board
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Service Personnel.
