POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Branch Executive Director, the Program Director will plan, organize and implement the outdoor activities and programs, including day camp, at the Lower Shore Family YMCA, (Pocomoke, MD). The Program Director should have a passion for the outdoors, teaching, and adventure programming and be able to work with a variety of ages and ability levels. The candidate must ensure the safety, well-being and personal growth of staff, campers and participants. Responsible for outdoor education, camp and youth programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Incorporate and model our YMCA Christian principles of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Develop outdoor programming activities to expand beyond summer camp.
- Oversee implementation of outdoor programs including curriculum development, daily activities, schedule, transportation and special events
- Responsible for program operations: licensing compliance, daily activities, communication, participant behavior management, scheduling, quality of programming, staff development and coordination of transportation.
- In cooperation with the Executive Branch Director, recruit, hire, supervise and train staff
- Work in a team environment and encourage open communication regarding concerns/issues with members, children, parents, co-workers and supervisors.
- Ensure the physical, emotional and social safety of participants and work with staff to create an environment in which all are respectful of each other and the guidelines of camp.
- Implement, track and report as required for grant funded programs.
- Report to the Branch Executive Director any concerns about the behavior of a particular participant and report any suspicions of child abuse immediately; document accordingly on an incident report.
- Build relationships with Programming participants and staff.
- Stay informed of staff choices, especially involving discipline, to ensure that all receive fair and appropriate treatment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA Degree required
- 2 to 4 years of experience in a leadership role in the areas of teaching, summer camp, youth programming, or relative experience.
- Experience preferred; education, outdoor programming, aquatics and/or camping.
- At least 21 years of age and with a good driving record (no more than 2 points on license) and willingness to obtain a CDL.
- Lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
- Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings. Mental and physical ability to deal with high stress situations and work well under pressure.
