What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tourtellottee Pool Lifeguard position at Young Mens Christian Association Of Mankato?
POSITION SUMMARY:
Lifeguards are responsible for supervising the aquatics area to prevent accidents, assist swimmers, and respond to emergencies. The incumbent will create a safe, enjoyable, and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and satisfaction in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures. Lifeguards will oversee multiple activities including open swim, water exercise, swim lessons, and lap swimming. This is a seasonal position with the opportunity of becoming permanent part-time by reapplying for a part-time Lifeguard position at the end of the season.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area, know/review all emergency procedures, and respond to emergency situations immediately.
- Perform first aid when necessary and complete appropriate incident/accident reports.
- Know and consistently apply safety rules and policies for the pools/aquatic facility.
- Perform arduous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue to the standards of lifeguard training.
- Inspect pool area daily for availability of rescue equipment, hazardous or unsafe conditions and report conditions to supervisor or maintenance department immediately.
- Maintain a clean and sanitary aquatic facility, including picking up and putting away equipment as well as daily cleaning tasks.
- Assist in readying the pool for scheduled activities including lane lines, toy features, walkie talkies, emergency equipment, lifejackets, etc.
- Address patron inquiries and resolve any issues promptly.
- Provide information about facility amenities, programs, schedules, and policies.
- Professionally communicate in person and able to project voice across a distance in normal and loud situations.
- Attend scheduled staff meetings, staff activities and ongoing trainings.
- Communicate any concerns, repairs, or incidents that may need follow-up to the Outdoor Pool Manager/Aquatics Director.
- Follow all YMCA policies and procedures including Child Abuse Prevention.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Pool Manager and Aquatic Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Required Certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, and AED for Professional Rescuer
- Must be at least 15 years of age.
- Six months or more of related lifeguard experience preferred.
- Ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
- Ability to recognize swimmers who may need assistance.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize, respond, and remedy unsafe/hazardous situations.
- Ability to communicate with all ages and levels of swimmers.
- Ability to work with diverse groups of people.
- Never been accused or convicted of any child abuse including sexual abuse.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The employee is regularly required to remain alert with no lapses of consciousness in a warm environment with air temperatures of 80 degrees or higher. Must be able to sit/stand for extended periods, able to hear distress signals/noises, observe all areas of the pool with clear vision, and know how to respond to emergency situations. Perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue, including swimming quickly, supporting adult body weight while swimming as far as 50 feet, and removing adult body weight from the pool. The ability to calmly and effectively react in an emergency situation.
