General Description:

Youth Program Facilitators are the heart of Youth Odyssey. Facilitators lead experiential sessions with a passion for the outdoors and a dedication to guiding youth toward their full potential. Youth Odyssey’s site-based Adventure Challenge Programs engage youth in schools, recreation centers, and low-income housing in challenging team building activities. Our Youth Leadership Camps guide youth to increase their self-confidence, trust, and leadership skills through life changing outdoor adventure experiences. As a Program Facilitator, you will be challenged to find and bring out the best in yourself, our team, and the youth you work with.

(Prefer a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree or relevant experience in a field related to roles and responsibilities in addition to a minimum of basic First Aid and CPR certification)

Youth Program Facilitator Job Responsibilities:

  • Reports weekly or as needed to Program Director.
  • Facilitates Adventure Challenge Programs at schools and community centers throughout the week, leading teambuilding and self-expression activities, and debrief conversations with participants.
  • Facilitates ropes courses, kayaking/canoeing trips, 3-day camping trips, and other adventure challenge activities (weekdays and weekends).
  • Facilitates week-long Youth Leadership Camps.
  • Prepares program reports on observations, conversations, and curriculum documents.
  • Provides photographs and videos as requested from Development and Marketing Departments of program participants during activities.
  • Attends all required training sessions.

Other tasks may include:

  • Vehicle/Equipment upkeep

  • Ropes Course general maintenance

Requirements:

  • Passion to work with youth ages 10-17 outdoors.
  • Ability to use discretion and critical thinking skills while leading sessions.
  • 20 years of age or older.
  • Current CPR/First Aid at a minimum (Youth Odyssey can refer certification classes).
  • Non-traditional hours to include evenings and weekends as required.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Ability to use own personal vehicle and carry the minimum liability insurance (when not using Youth Odyssey vehicles).
  • Valid and current Texas Drivers License.
  • Good and verifiable driving record.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a Program Facilitator to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the Program Facilitator is working in a climate-controlled office environment except when in the field and exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.

  • Must be able to carry a 40lb backpack on the trail for 5-7 days.
  • Must be able to achieve and maintain ACCT Level I Challenge Course certification within one year of employment when annual certification/recertification occurs.
  • Must be able to climb, belay, rappel, setup/takedown of elements and successfully run all activities at the Youth Odyssey's Ropes Course.
  • Intermediate experience swimmer for paddling and other water-based events.
  • Normal workday physical activity includes frequent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking.
  • Requires use of hands, arms, legs, neck, and head while performing tasks.
  • Requires occasional twisting at desk when answering phone calls or keyboarding.
  • Requires retrieving files by pulling and pushing cabinet drawers with occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, and reaching above shoulder level.
  • Requires data entry into computer keyboard.
  • Requires speaking in person and on the telephone with staff and others.
  • Requires occasional lifting and or moving up to 30 lbs (some exceptions).

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $37,000.00 per year

Experience:

  • working with non-family youth: 1 year (Preferred)
