Founded in 1912 by a dedicated group of women, who had incidentally been told that creating an organization for women and by women would never fly, the YWCA Central Virginia has grown and adapted to meet the varying needs of the communities we serve.
YWCA Central Virginia serves seven counties and one city, an area of 4,400 square miles with a population of over 400,000 community members. We currently host three key direct service programs: Domestic Violence Prevention, Sexual Assault Response, and Town Center Women’s Residential Housing.
Position Overview
All YWCA Central Virginia staff members are expected to function as self-directed members of a team, model professional standards and YWCA’s mission, and help sustain an environment that eliminates racism, promotes diversity and inclusion, and encourages women’s and girl’s investment in themselves and in the YWCA movement.
Under direct leadership of the Executive Director, the HR Generalist will support human resources functions including recruitment, onboarding, compliance, and employee relations. The HR Generalist ensures HR policies and practices align with the mission of YWCA Central Virginia and fosters an inclusive workplace. This role is also responsible for the coordination and management of volunteers and interns. As the first point of contact for new employees, volunteers, and interns, the HR Generalist exudes the mission of YWCA Central Virginia from the employee perspective and sets the tone for all future interactions by ensuring a welcoming environment where employees of all backgrounds and abilities feel valued, respected, and empowered.
Key Responsibilities
Human Resources
o Manage the recruitment process to include job postings, screenings, and interviews
o Collaborate with managers to understand skills and competencies required for open positions
o Facilitate efficient and effective new employee orientations and onboarding experiences
o Ensure all positions are compliant and aligned with the mission and goals of YWCA Central Virginia through the maintenance of job descriptions
o Support performance management processes and documentation
o Review, track, and document compliance with mandatory training and continuing education requirements
o Coordinate employee recognition and morale initiatives
o Track key HR metrics and provide monthly reports to Executive Director
o Serve as the point of contact for employee inquiries regarding HR policies, benefits, and workplace grievances
o Attend and participate in employee disciplinary meetings, investigations, and terminations ensuring adherence to established policies and procedures
o Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations
o Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new human resources technologies, talent management, and employment law
o Respond to phone calls, emails, and other inquiries, directing them appropriately as needed
o Maintain organized confidential electronic and paper filing systems
o Implement effective processes for streamlining administrative functions to maximize efficiency
Volunteer and Intern Coordinator
o Develop and implement recruitment strategies to attract quality volunteers and interns
o Screen, interview, and assign volunteers and interns to appropriate roles
o Coordinate and facilitate orientation and ongoing training
o Perform outreach with community partners, schools, and colleges to promote opportunities and identify potential partnerships
o Work closely with managers to identify volunteer and intern needs and opportunities
o Regularly evaluate program effectiveness and adjust as needed
Other Duties
- Uphold the organizational mission throughout all actions and communications within the work environment and when representing YWCA Central Virginia in public, with other employees, program participants, stakeholders, community partners, donors, etc.
- Collaborate with and participate in cross-training opportunities across YWCA Central Virginia programs to develop an inclusive understanding of services, foster teamwork, and enhance service delivery through cross-functional knowledge and support
- Attend staff meetings including program meetings, departmental meetings, and all-staff meetings
- Maintain knowledge of YWCA USA network and all YWCA Central Virginia programs, services, and initiatives
- Participate in and positively represent YWCA Central Virginia during work related activities held outside of regular work hours

Preferred Qualifications
o Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
o Minimum of two years of Human Resource or administrative experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting
o Experience working with diverse, multicultural population
o Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and comfortable or willing to learn best practices for Microsoft Outlook 365, Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and Slack
o Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive
o Experience using office equipment including Windows-based computers, printers, scanners, and fax machines
Physical Requirements
o Maintain dexterity, vision, and coordination
o Mobile abilities including, but not limited to, walking, bending, squatting, crouching, twisting, kneeling, reaching, climbing stairs, etc.
o Ability to sit for extended periods, 6-8 hours/day
o Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
Environmental Conditions
The incumbent will work in YWCA facilities with the likelihood of interruptions from clients, staff, or external partners, often addressing urgent and sensitive issues. The ability to stay focused and manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a dynamic and potentially high-stress setting is required.
Mental Demands
This position requires work which may cause significant stress with various deadlines and work that requires attention to detail with high levels of accuracy. The incumbent must also deal with a wide variety of people on various issues including, but not limited to, those facing domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, poverty, homelessness, and racism due to the mission and programs of YWCA.
Position Type and Expected Hours
o This is a full-time, exempt position. The HR and Volunteer Coordinator will work 35 hours each week on a traditional daylight shift, with some additional weekend and evening work as required.
o This position is eligible for benefits including the opportunity to buy into group health insurance (medical, dental, vision), provided life insurance and short-term disability, and the opportunity after two (2) years to join YWCA USA Retirement Program
Pay Scale
o $45,000 – $50,000 annually depending on experience
o Eligible for regular pay for YWCA Central Virginia observed holidays
