What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bilingual Parent Educator position at YWCA Mankato?

Position Summary: The New American Families program provides Parents as Teachers (PAT) home visiting services for immigrant and refugee women that are either pregnant or have child(ren) aged 0 to 5. A certified parent educator implements the PAT model, emphasizing parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, and family well-being in their work with families. Utilizing the PAT Foundational Curriculum in culturally sensitive ways, the parent educator partners, facilitates, and reflects with families.

This position requires critical thinking through the lens of race and gender and intersections with poverty.

Qualifications

  • Minimum High school diploma/GED plus at least two years of previous supervised work experience with young children and/or parents
  • Fluent in another language common to our client population required (Spanish/English)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills (e.g., nonjudgmental, objective, reflective, empathetic, patient, and tactful)
  • Ability to establish rapport with families and empower them by building on their strengths
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated
  • Computer skills, including web browsing, email, Internet, and word-processing

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Provide comprehensive case management to 10-14 families
  • Conduct at least two home visits a month with enrolled families
  • Travel to families in Blue Earth and Nicollet counties. Must have a reliable means of transportation, current driver’s license, good driving record, and auto insurance coverage.
  • Engage in recruitment activities (as applicable)
  • Complete and initial and annual family centered assessment with each family
  • Develop, monitor, and review goals with each family
  • Plan, provide, and document personal visits focused on parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting and family well-being
  • Use the PAT Foundational curriculum to share research-based information with families
  • Provide group connections to give families an opportunity to build social connections with each other, engage in parent-child interaction activities, and increase their knowledge of ways to support children’s development
  • Complete at least an initial and annual developmental screening and health review for each enrolled child
  • Connect families to resources that help them reach their goals and address their needs
  • Help parents and children transition to other services as needed, to preschool, or to kindergarten
  • Maintain and submit in a timely way all required family and program documentation
  • Organize and inventory supplies/materials, etc.
  • Participate in at least two hours of reflective supervision monthly and at least two hours of staff meetings monthly
  • Obtain competency-based professional development and renew parent educator certification annually
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement

Other Responsibilities

  • Assist with YWCA Mankato office operations when working in the office
  • Assist with other YWCA Mankato events as required
  • Other activities as requested by the Program Manager
  • Patient, able to resolve conflicts, creative, and resourceful.
  • Excellent problem solving, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Frequently faces deadlines with attention to detail and must complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to handle multifaceted tasks on a frequent basis.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $19.63 - $22.75 per hour

Expected hours: 30 per week
