JOB SUMMARY

The Union County Family Justice Center (FJC) is a collaboration among existing public and private agencies in Union County, NJ, to provide support, services, and resources for victims of domestic violence, with the goal of making these services more accessible and available. The collaboration represents a true integration of services that is fully client-centered and meets the needs of clients in a holistic manner and in a single location.

The Legal Education and Outreach Advocate position will assist in educating current litigants about how to navigate family court, and the wider community about the dynamics of domestic violence and the rights of domestic violence victims in civil and criminal cases. This position will work closely with the Court Advocate and report to the Director of the Family Justice Center.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS & ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree.
  • Must be interested in working with victims of domestic violence.
  • Previous experience teaching or training preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent verbal, written, and public speaking skills.
  • Knowledge of computer programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Hours are primarily weekday morning, but must be flexible to work on occasional evenings and weekend days to conduct workshops and attend outreach events.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Conduct workshops in the waiting areas of Family Court for current litigants.
  • Meet individually and conduct intakes for litigants with specific questions about their cases following the workshop or who come to the office.
  • Conduct outreach to community and government organizations throughout Union County to offer legal education workshops to community members as well as staff of non-profit and governmental agencies.
  • Attend outreach and tabling events to spread awareness about the YWCA and recruit potential volunteers.
  • Conduct screening interviews and background checks for potential volunteers and facilitate training of volunteers.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of volunteers, in particular volunteers in the role of STEP Mentors (community members who act as career mentors for survivors engaging with the workforce development program) - by surveying victims who have received services.
  • Perform data entry relating to services provided.
  • Participate in supervisory meetings with the Director of Family Justice Center and Court Advocate Coordinator on a regular basis.
  • Attend weekly FJC staff meeting and monthly YWCA staff meetings.
  • Complete 40-hour Domestic Violence training.
