Job Overview
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Preschool Teacher to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating a nurturing and stimulating environment for young children, fostering their social, emotional, and cognitive development. This role requires an individual who is enthusiastic about early childhood education and possesses the skills necessary to manage a classroom effectively.
Duties
- Upholds and furthers the mission of the YWCA of Hawaii Island which is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all
- Carries out the planned daily activities for children as determined by the original teacher of the classroom
- Work with children implementing planned curriculum and daily activities.
- Able to plan and lead large group meetings, activities, transitions, etc.
- Conducts daily outdoor games or activities
- Implements, and evaluates small group and interest activities.
- Implements, and evaluates program curriculum through interest center.
- Presents group storytelling
- Demonstrates warm supportive attitude and interactions with children through body and verbal language.
- Provides children with positive guidance in gaining skills in problem solving, conflict resolution and self-control.
- Works with children in developing children’s positive self-esteem
- Works cooperatively as a team staff member
- Assists and supports other team members.
- Provides support and leadership in age level team.
- Deals with problems in a constructive manner.
- Provides progress reviews on each assigned child
- Provide assessments on each assigned child on a regular basis.
- Assist in reports requested by parents or other agencies.
- Conducts parent/teacher conferences – bi-annually, and as needed.
- Communicates and interacts with the parents to maintain a supportive relationship.
- Participates in events planned with parents, i.e., parent workdays, orientation, open house, meetings, and other events.
- Shows respect for families through behavior and language.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Maintains an environment that is age-appropriate for preschool children
- Corrects or brings to the attention of the Preschool Director any potentially dangerous or hazardous conditions or situations.
- Reports all injuries to the Preschool Director.
- Reports all suspected cases of abuse to the Preschool Director.
- Maintains continuous visual and auditory supervision of children at all times to ensure their safety on campus and field trips.
- Provides input to Preschool Director on program goals, objectives, and overall program evaluation.
- Participates in staff meetings and planning times, when required
- Provides input on selection of program supplies and equipment
- Assumes assigned administrative responsibilities, as directed
- Maintains professional development by participating in training provided by agency and other organizations as available
- Assist in conducting in service training and/or parent workshops as needed
- Meets and continues to maintain all Department of Human Services and program position requirements.
- Per requirements of DHS Registry for licensed center-based childcare providers, on-going training shall be completed annually and consisting of 16 hours in at least 2 of the following approved topic areas:
1. Physical of the young child
2. Care of the sick child
3. Child Nutrition
4. Child growth and development
5. Learning activities and play
6. Family engagement
7. Managing challenging behaviors
8. Prevention of child maltreatment and abuse
9. Children with special needs
10. First aid and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation
11. Health and safety
12. Childcare business or program management
13. Community resources, and
14. Safe sleep training (require if caring for children who are less than one year old)
For non-credit bearing on-going training completed to be recognized, a copy of a certificate issued from the training organization or trainer for each training, needs the following information:
1. Name/title of the training
2. Organization/source providing the training
3. Date of training
4. Number of training hours completed
5. Name of the trainee, and
6. Name and signature of the trainer
For credit-bearing on-going training completed, a copy of the college transcript shall be submitted to HR and the PATCH Registry office. PATCH will review the transcript for acceptance in meeting the proposed on-going training requirement.

Requirements
- Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in Early Childhood Development from an accredited college or university plus three years’ experience working in an early childhood program; or
- A.S. degree (60 credits) with an Early Childhood Certificate. Three years supervised teaching experience ECE program is desired, or.
- Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from an accredited college or university with 12 credits in child development or early childhood training courses. Three years working in ECE program is desired, or;
- Bachelor’s degree in related field from an accredited college or university with 12 credits in child development plus three years’ experience working in an ECE program.
- A genuine passion for educating young minds and fostering their growth in a supportive environment
Other Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must be able to meet the requirements of the Teacher Level in the Licensing Matrix for Group Child Care Centers
- Must have a current TB clearance
- Must be presently or willing to register by fingerprinting with the Department of Human Services
- Must be certified in infant/child first aid including rescue breathing and first aid for choking after hire
- Must have physician's clearance to perform duties
- Must have a clean criminal background/record check and must pass a pre-employment drug screening
