What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Head of Day Camp (Seasonal) position at YWCA Vermont Camp Hochelaga?
Overview: The Assistant Head of Day Camp works closely with the Head of Day Camp to ensure that all day campers attending Hochelaga over the summer are well cared for, and to support in enthusiastically leading and managing the Day Camp staff team to ensure they feel prepared and organized to provide the best programming possible.
The ideal candidate for this position is someone with experience working with diverse populations of young children, and a complex understanding of how to best support group organization, while still meeting individual needs of campers and staff.

Salary: This position is classified as seasonal, exempt. Salary is based upon applicant’s skills and experience. Includes room and board. The Assistant Head of Day Camp is not required to live on premises during the camp season, though occasional overnights for “on-call” nights required.

Qualifications:
- Someone who knows how to take proactive initiative
- Someone with a strong sense of personal accountability
- Demonstrate exceptional leadership skills
- At least 21 years of age with clean driving record, valid driver’s license, and comfort driving 15 passenger vans (preferred)
- Previous camp staff experience, preferably in supervisory capacity
- Ability to supervise and teach activity based classes
- Ability to request and accept guidance and supervision
- Ability to respect and cooperate with campers, fellow staff and administration
- Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
Responsibilities:
- Help set up the Day Camp area prior to and during staff training, order supplies and check equipment with Head of Day Camp
- Update space weekly with staff team to ensure all campers can know where to go during their time at camp
- Communicate with Head of Day Camp daily in regards to any camper conflicts, behaviors, or incidents that may have arisen that should be communicated about to families
- Support in taking on responsibilities for the daily operations of day camp including check-ins, check-outs, swim checks, program sign-ups, meal-times, head checks (Mondays only), and class/program organization amongst other things
- Instruct campers and staff in emergency procedures such as fire drills, evacuations, Day Camp emergency or other emergency situations, per the procedures identified by the Camp Director, and help train staff in emergency and safety procedures in assigned program areas
- Teach and monitor proper use of equipment, supplies and safety considerations
- Support Day Campers’ progress in all levels: including group game time and down time
- Discuss with the Head of Day Camp the performance of staff assigned to the Day Camp and other program feedback
- Maintain long standing Hochelaga traditions and emphasize a camp culture that is relevant, healthy and fun
- Lead by example in observing and enforcing camp guidelines and safety regulations
- Supervise all assigned aspects of the campers’ day including bus pick-ups and drop-offs, morning reveille, cabin clean-up, meal times, rest hour, activities or classes, bed-time and other on-duty times as assigned
- These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required
Essential Functions:
- Maintain a balanced schedule that includes rest and self care along with work and play
- Communicate and work with a variety of age and skill level groups and provide necessary instruction to staff and campers
- Identify and respond appropriately to environmental and other hazards related to the activity or situation
- Plan and conduct activities and supervise camper safety
- Strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers in all assigned areas while on duty (camp days can be long - most days, our day camp bus departs camp as early as 6am, and arrives back at camp after dropping off all campers around 6pm. Two nights per week, our day campers are also offered the option to sleepover at Hochelaga)
- Set up, demonstrate, guide, and to teach class specific skills to campers of all ages
- Understanding of when to request, and accept guidance and supervision
- Respect and cooperate with fellow staff and administration
- Participate in a strenuous camp program with campers, while maintaining a high level of energy and enthusiasm
- Ability to self-motivate, and lead as a role model to our campers
