Controller

Job Summary 

The Controller will oversee and manage the accounting functions for 20 entities, including development projects, land holdings, and various other businesses. This role will oversee all third-party accounting resources, ensuring seamless coordination and communication with external accounting partners. The Controller will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and compliance of all financial processes while providing strategic financial insights to support growth and decision-making. The ideal candidate must be based in Maui. 

Duties/Responsibilities 

• Manage accounting for a diverse portfolio of 20 entities, including development projects, land holdings, and other multiple businesses. 
• Lead all bookkeeping efforts, ensuring accuracy across accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations. 
• Serve as the primary point of contact for the external accounting firm, ensuring smooth communication and timely delivery of all financial reports and services. 
• Establish and maintain accounting policies and procedures, ensuring strong internal controls are in place to minimize risk. 
• Review and approve financial reports produced by the external accounting firm, ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). 
• Collaborate with management on annual budgets, forecasts, and financial planning. Provide analysis on significant budget variances and deliver insights for strategic decision-making. 
• Offer financial analysis for capital investments, pricing strategies, contract negotiations, and business expansion initiatives. 
• Manage relationships with external auditors, overseeing audits and ensuring the timely provision of necessary financial information. 
• Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, keeping the business in good standing with government agencies. 
• Act as the quarterback for third-party accounting resources, managing their performance, deliverables, and alignment with the company’s goals. 
• Provide strategic financial insights and recommendations to support the business owner and executive team in decision-making. 
• Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as needed or assigned to support the business operations. 

Required Skills/Abilities 

• Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage relationships between internal teams and external partners. 
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. 
• Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple entities and projects simultaneously. 
• Proficiency in accounting software and financial reporting tools. 
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software. 
• Ability to analyze complex financial data and provide actionable insights and recommendations. 

Education and Experience 

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or related field. 
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting, finance, or a similar role, preferably within a multi-entity or development project environment. 
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation preferred. 
• Experience managing third-party accounting resources and working with external firms is highly desirable.
