Scientific Diving Intern

Location: Various field locations across Texas

Pay: $20 - $25/hour

Duration: Part-time March 1 – May 16, Full-time May 19 – August 22, Part-time August 22 – November 30

Note: Candidates must be comfortable with extended periods in remote locations and willing to adapt to unpredictable field conditions.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct scuba diving operations in rivers, lakes, and other freshwater environments
• Survey for and collect freshwater mussels following scientific protocols
• Accurately report and record field data
• Prepare, maintain, and decontaminate diving and sampling gear
• Collaborate effectively as part of a close-knit team, ensuring safety and productivity

What to Expect

• Travel: Up to 75% travel to remote locations across Texas, with accommodations primarily being hotels. Food and lodging will be paid for while in travel status.
• Work Conditions: Rugged terrain with steep, slippery, or muddy banks; high heat and humidity; low to zero underwater visibility.
• Team Dynamics: Strong teamwork and communication are essential in demanding field conditions.

Qualifications

Required:

• Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver certifications
• Ability to work in physically demanding and challenging conditions
• Prior field or scientific diving experience
• Positive attitude even when the going gets tough
• Safety-oriented mindset

Preferred:

• Experience using dry suits and full-face masks
• Current First Aid/CPR certification
• Small boat handling experience
• Complete set of dive gear that is current on maintenance
