Day Camp Lead Counselors
TEAM: DAY CAMP
REPORTS TO: ZEPHYR POINT DAY CAMP COORDINATOR
Position Description:
Day Camp Lead Counselors (LCs) serve as the leader of a small group of elementary & middle school aged campers in our Camp Zephyr & Beyond Camp Zephyr program. The focus of this position is to provide the conditions for campers to experience outdoor recreation and cultivate new friendships in a nurturing environment. LCs are responsible for interacting with their campers, engaging in all camp activities, as well as facilitating the transitions from activity to activity. Each week, lead counselors are partnered up with a fellow co-counselor — therefore, an understanding of teamwork and willingness to work together is essential. LCs will also work alongside the Seminary Intern to facilitate daily “Trail Talks” with their groups that stem from a faith-based curriculum. As such, LCs must have an open mind to the Christian faith and the ability to teach and communicate what a life of spirituality in various forms looks like. Applicants must be mature, flexible, and able to multitask and focus throughout shifting priorities as well as manage campers of varying ages and maturity.
Job Duties:
Responsibilities
- Work alongside other members of the Day Camp Team to implement the Camp Zephyr Day Camp program
- Lead a group of 16-22 elementary aged campers throughout activities each day alongside a co-counselor each week.
- LCs will work alongside the Seminary Intern to provide age-appropriate “Trail Talks” with their groups that stem from a faith-based curriculum
- Exercise sound judgment and decision-making to assess and mitigate hazards
- Effectively build rapport with campers, co-counselors, Day Camp coordinator, Zephyr Point staff, and camp parents
- Role-model inclusive behavior and facilitate a positive group culture
- Maintain high energy, positive attitude, and focus on campers’ safety and enjoyment of program
- Aid with daily check-in/check-out & transportation for Day Camp program (when assigned)
- Participation in intentional community as a member of the Zephyr Point Summer Staff
- Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- One year out of High School by June 2025
- Ability to pass a criminal background check
- Experience working with children and youth
- Proficient soft-skills necessary to support youth and children’s mental health and emotional challenges
- Strong decision-making skills, ability to work without direct supervision and adaptable to changing, dynamic environments
- Group management skills
- Professionalism in attitude and appearance
- Ability to manage self-care and energy throughout a busy and intense summer
- Passionate about the health and safety of children and youth while offering fun and freeing experiences for camper
Required Certifications – Must be obtained by the first day of camp
Certifications must be valid through employment end date.
- CPR/First Aid certification (Provided during staff training week, if needed)
- Youth Mental Health First Aid certification (Provided during staff training week, if needed)
Preferred Qualifications
- College degree or coursework in elementary education or other related fields
- Proficiency in Spanish
- Previous experience working in a camp setting
Required Physical Demands
- Ability to walk and stand on feet nearly 8 hours a day.
- Ability to walk up and down a minimum of 20 flights of stairs a day with campers.
- Ability to withstand long days in the sun and heat as well as cold windy days.
- Ability to carry up to 35lbs
Work Schedule:
The Day Camp Lead Counselor position begins Friday June 13th, 2025 and will terminate on Sunday August 17th, 2025. Camp Zephyr is a day camp running consistently for 8 weeks in the summer Monday-Friday 8:00-4:30. Counselors should expect to work those hours with a few longer days per week.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Compensation: $3,750 total for the summer
- Housing in Lakeview Lodge (June 12th– August 17th)
- Meals provided Monday-Friday through term of employment
- Travel and certification stipends are available
