POSITION SUMMARY: This position will provide support to the classroom and assist the classroom or resource teacher in achieving student learning objectives per Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Specific duties will include working with individual students or small groups to help them achieve and maintain the skill levels of the class as a whole. Will also assist with classroom management and implement student specific behavior plans as appropriate as well as providing for special health care needs.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a typical classroom environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. There are no environmental hazards indicated for this position. Minimal travel between buildings may be required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned.)
Essential Functions:
1. Assist the classroom teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on IEP and understanding individual students needs, interests and abilities.
2. Assist as needed for district and state wide testing per student accommodations.
3. Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
4. Serve as chief source of information and assistance to any guest teacher assigned in the absence of the teacher.
5. Implements student specific behavior plans to promote effective and safe student learning environment.
6. Provides instruction, under teacher supervision, to students in a variety of individual and group activities to reinforce IEP plans, instructional objectives and promote student success.
7. Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support staff to evaluate progress and participates in implementation of IEP objectives.
8. Adapts student classroom activities, assignments and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
9. Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments (lunchroom, playground, restrooms, classrooms, assemblies, field trips, etc.) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
10. Implements and assists in development of appropriate prompting strategies to develop students’ maximum independence.
11. Maintains a variety of confidential data bases and records to document activities and provide reliable information for program facilitation.
General Functions:
1. Communicate effectively and professionally with a variety of individuals within ZCS including teachers, staff, parents and families, as directed by the classroom teacher.
2. Must maintain cooperative working relationships while maintaining strict confidentiality of specified information.
3. Attend all in-service, training and staff meetings as needed.
4. Assist as needed for district and state wide testing per student IEP directives.
5. Assists classroom teacher with maintaining availability and organization of all instructional materials.
6. Follow behavior plans and promptly address challenging or physically aggressive behavior.
7. Provides individual personal care supports to students as needed.
8. Other duties as assigned by Classroom Teacher or Building Administration.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Must have ability to relate well and communicate effectively with a variety of individuals including students, staff, parents, and classroom volunteers. Must be able to perform functions of the job with limited supervision and maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
Education: HS Diploma or GED equivalent required. Some college coursework in special education preferred.
Experience: 0-2 years experience as Instructional Assistant or in special education school setting preferred.
Certificate/License: None.
