Summary: The Package Development Engineer is responsible for the scope, innovation, and scalability of packaging solutions for new and reformulated products across all categories at ZO Skin Health. They will serve as a technical expert and ensure that all aspects of the packaging meet or exceed quality, esthetics and product delivery requirements. The Package Development Engineer will collaborate closely with Quality, R&D and CDMOs and Marketing to bring innovative products to life in a scalable and efficient manner. As an integral member of the Product Development team, they must drive the development of packaging that bridges the gap between strategic business goals, design and delivery priorities and matching the desired look for the products.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Package Concept Feasibility:
- Provide comprehensive feasibility of each concept or package that defines function, manufacturability, component cost, tooling estimates, preliminary development lead time, risk, and global consistency.
- Conduct and oversee package screening tests for performance checks on perspective package candidates.
Package Development:
- Support the Marketing Portfolio and R&D by managing all aspects of the package development process including package feasibility and component/ package specifications and technical profiles.
- Ensure the construction and design provides the most cost-effective way to achieve design criteria but also provide the best function and quality.
- Develop and implement package test plans for all projects.
- Work with Quality and CDMOs to define specifications, design criteria and defect ranges to ensure optimal process flow from manufacture of components through filling and assembly.
- Develop package specifications and validate that technical drawings clearly identify all aspects required to define the package.
- Maintain ZO Skin Health packaging portfolio material and weights log.
- Ensure all projects are completed and meet the intended design, quality, cost, functionality, and manufacturability objectives.
- Work with CDMOs to ensure component production and filling/assembly are operating efficiently at optimal rate of production.
- Ensure that packages/components meet the needs of the Brand, corporation, Regulatory and consumer safety.
- Identify and inform the team of any risks and or delays during development by communicating and working closely with all development groups including Marketing, Product Development, R&D and Design.
- Identify risks and ways to mitigate risks to support component availability requirement.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- May perform other duties as needed or assigned in order to assist with ZO operation.
Work Environment: The work environment is indoors in a professional office environment. The floor surfaces are carpeted in office areas and conference rooms with vinyl floor covering typical in hallways, break rooms and computer rooms.
Work Hours: The position is 5 days a week, 8 hours a day with minimum 3 days in office. Time of initial start may vary with work hours typically 8am-5pm. Work hours and shifts are subject to change depending on operating business conditions and needs. The employee may be required to work overtime and holidays or weekends. Minimal travel (up to 10%) may be required to visit CMOs and/or additional product development resources.
Physical and Mental Demands: Sedentary. Exerting up to 10 of force occasionally and/or greater than a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Knows and follows proper office-safety protocols and maintain a professional and polished appearance. Use the ability to multitask and monitor multiple projects and needs of internal and external customers. Ability to read and interpret documents such as product data sheets, product testing procedures, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.. The employee must also be able to maintain and preserve confidentiality of company information, exhibit strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with internal stakeholders.

Qualifications
Education / Certification:
- BS degree in Packaging Science or Engineering required.
Direct Experience:
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience required.
- Package development experience in skin care or personal care categories highly preferred.
- Proficiency in computer systems including MS Excel, Word, Outlook, and Project/Timeline management systems.
Technical Competencies:
- Technical competency in analysis of geometric objects in 2- and 3-dimensions including understanding of clearances, tolerances, fit and finish of packaging components and subcomponents.
- Knowledge of materials used in the construction and manufacturing of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging.
- Knowledge of decorating techniques and materials used on primary, secondary and tertiary packaging.
- Comprehensive knowledge of test methods used to validate component/package performance.
Additional Competencies: The employee must be highly proficient in written and verbal communication in English as well as detail oriented, possess excellent analytical skills, and inter and intra departmental communication ability. They will have excellent ability to solve problems and adapt to changing outcomes and priorities. They should possess a process-improvement mindset to collaborate on ideas to improve efficiencies.
Salary : $100,000 - $115,000
